  {"id":24,"date":"2015-10-22T19:47:38","date_gmt":"2015-10-22T19:47:38","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/p20.test.hyperspective.com\/dualcredit\/?page_id=24"},"modified":"2026-02-13T12:20:14","modified_gmt":"2026-02-13T22:20:14","slug":"running-start","status":"publish","type":"page","link":"https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/dualcredit\/running-start\/","title":{"rendered":"Running Start"},"content":{"rendered":"<h2>What is Running Start?<\/h2>\n<p>Running Start is a program that allows &#8220;eligible&#8221; high school students to take a college course at a University of Hawai\u2018i campus as part of their high school coursework.<\/p>\n<p>This partnership between the Hawai\u2018i State Department of Education (HIDOE) and the University of Hawai\u2018i System (UH) allows high school students attending public and charter schools to enroll in college classes during the fall, spring, and summer terms &#8211; with the opportunity to earn both high school and college credits.<\/p>\n<p>Currently, nine University of Hawai\u2018i campuses participate in the Running Start program:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Hawai\u02bbi Community College (includes Hilo\/Manono, K\u014d Education Center, and P\u0101lamanui campuses)<\/li>\n<li>Honolulu Community College<\/li>\n<li>Kapi\u02bbolani Community College<\/li>\n<li>Kaua\u02bbi Community College<\/li>\n<li>Leeward Community College<\/li>\n<li>University of Hawai\u02bbi at Hilo<\/li>\n<li>University of Hawai\u02bbi Maui College<\/li>\n<li>University of Hawai\u02bbi &#8211; West O\u02bbahu<\/li>\n<li>Windward Community College<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>The University of Hawai\u02bbi at M\u0101noa does not participate in the Running Start program.<\/p>\n<h2>Eligibility Requirements<\/h2>\n<p>Any public high school and charter school student is considered to be eligible if they meet campus admissions requirements, attend a public (HIDOE) or charter school within the state of Hawai\u02bbi, and are under the age of 21 as of September 1st of the school year in which the college course is taken.<\/p>\n<h4>Students must also fulfill and comply with college campus requirements such as:<\/h4>\n<ul>\n<li>Completing admissions forms\/applications<\/li>\n<li>Meeting admissions requirements and\/or deadlines<\/li>\n<li>Receiving satisfactory scores on appropriate Math and English placement tests or equivalent satisfactory scores using \u00a0alternative measures of placement<\/li>\n<li>Providing evidence of TB and MMR immunization requirements (typically only required for home-schooled students)<\/li>\n<li>Paying for college tuition and fees<\/li>\n<li>Maintaining acceptable academic standing<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2>GEAR UP Running Start Scholarship Details<\/h2>\n<div style=\"position: relative;\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft wp-image-126\" style=\"float: left; margin-right: 20px;\" src=\"\/dualcredit\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/10\/logo-gear-up-150x150.gif\" alt=\"logo-gear-up\" width=\"100\" height=\"101\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/dualcredit\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/10\/logo-gear-up-150x150.gif 150w, https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/dualcredit\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/10\/logo-gear-up-296x300.gif 296w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 100px) 100vw, 100px\" \/>GEAR UP Hawai\u2018i supports low-income students\u2019 participation in the Running Start program (available at 9 of the 10 University of Hawai\u02bbi campuses) by providing support for tuition, fees, and books. GEAR UP Hawai\u2018i offers GEAR UP Running Start Scholarships to Hawai\u2018i public high school students who are economically disadvantaged (defined as receiving free lunch, reduced lunch, or the equivalent for schools not participating in the National School Lunch Program, or as participating in the Supplemental Assistance for Needy Families \u2013 SNAP \u2013 or Temporary Assistance for Needy Families \u2013 TANF \u2013 program).<\/div>\n<div>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>GEAR UP Running Start Scholarships cover the cost of tuition, fees, and required textbooks for one 3 or 4 credit class. (Please note that the scholarship may only be used for 4 credits if the course is designated as a 4 credit class or if there is a one-credit lab that must be taken concurrently with a 3 credit class.) The scholarship is valid only for one semester &#8211; the semester listed on the scholarship award letter and voucher. Eligible students can apply for scholarships for more semesters; additional scholarships for students who have already received a GEAR UP Running Start Scholarship for a previous term will be provided if funding is available. The scholarship award is conditional upon verification of socioeconomic status by the Hawai\u2018i State Department of Education, as well as admission to the University of Hawai\u2018i campus you are planning to attend. Please note that scholarship funding is only available to U.S. citizens and permanent residents; international students are not eligible for scholarship funding. Priority awards are given to students who are economically disadvantaged and who have not received prior Running Start Scholarship funding from GEAR UP.<\/p>\n<p>Please note that there have recently been modifications made to the dual credit application in the hopes that it will be easier for students to apply for a GEAR UP Running Start Scholarship.\u00a0 Starting in the Summer 2022 term, students will only need to answer one question to apply for the scholarship.\u00a0 Under the GEAR UP Running Start Scholarship portion of the dual credit application, eligible students should select &#8220;Yes&#8221; under the &#8220;I meet all of the(se) eligibility requirements and would like to be considered for a GEAR UP Running Start Scholarship&#8221; and submit their dual application form online prior to the scholarship deadline for the semester.<\/p>\n<p>Students who apply for the GEAR UP Running Start scholarship will be contacted via email approximately 2-3 weeks after the scholarship deadline.\u00a0 Students will be notified if they have been awarded or denied a scholarship along with further instructions and information.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Receipt of a GEAR UP Running Start Scholarship is dependent on funding availability.\u00a0 <span style=\"color: #ff0000;\"><strong>GEAR UP Running Start Scholarships will NOT be available after the Summer 2026 term.<\/strong><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<h2>Running Start FAQs<\/h2>\n<h3 style=\"margin-bottom: 0;\"><a style=\"color: #444;\" href=\"#eligibility_questions\" data-toggle=\"collapse\">Eligibility Questions<\/a><\/h3>\n<div id=\"eligibility_questions\" class=\"collapse\">\n<h4>Q: Can a home-schooled student participate in the Running Start program?<\/h4>\n<p>Home-schooled students have the option to participate in college credit opportunities. We encourage all home-schooled students to check with the specific University of Hawai\u02bdi campus for their admission policies and eligibility requirements, as they may differ by campus.<\/p>\n<h4>Q: Can a private school student participate in the Running Start program?<\/h4>\n<p>Running Start is mandated by the State of Hawai\u02bdi and is a partnership between the Hawai\u02bdi State Department of Education and University of Hawai\u02bdi System. Students from private schools may be able to obtain similar results by enrolling in an Early Admit Program if their high school principal is willing to award high school credit. For more information about \u201cEarly Admit\u201d programs, please contact the University of Hawai\u02bdi campus where you wish to enroll.<\/p>\n<h4>Q: Can a second year senior participate in Running Start?<\/h4>\n<p>Yes.<\/p>\n<h4>Q: May a student expelled from high school participate in Running Start?<\/h4>\n<p>No.<\/p>\n<h4>Q: Are there any exceptions to Running Start eligibility?<\/h4>\n<p>No.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<h3 style=\"margin-bottom: 0;\"><a style=\"color: #444;\" href=\"#college_registration\" data-toggle=\"collapse\">College Registration &amp; Enrollment Questions<\/a><\/h3>\n<div id=\"college_registration\" class=\"collapse\">\n<h4>Is there a registration deadline for Running Start?<\/h4>\n<p>Yes. Students should check with their high school counselor and the UH campus Running Start counselor\/contact for information about applicable deadlines.<\/p>\n<h4>Q: Can a student withdraw from a college class through Running Start without the permission of the high school?<\/h4>\n<p>Technically, yes; however, in order to plan for high school graduation, the student should discuss their plan to withdraw with their high school counselor.<\/p>\n<h4>Q: How do I know which classes I can take and which classes I am qualified\/eligible for?<\/h4>\n<p>Please meet with your UH campus Running Start counselor for an advising session before completing your Dual Credit Application and before registration begins.\u00a0 Your Running Start counselor can advise you on which classes you are eligible for and\/or can advise you on how to qualify.<\/p>\n<h4>Q: How do I know which classes will apply to the degree\/career I am interested in?<\/h4>\n<p>Please meet with your UH campus Running Start counselor for an advising session before completing your Dual Credit Application and before registration begins.\u00a0 Your Running Start counselor can advise you on which classes align with your intended major and\/or career pathway.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<h3 style=\"margin-bottom: 0;\"><a style=\"color: #444;\" href=\"#accomodation_questions\" data-toggle=\"collapse\">Accommodation Questions<\/a><\/h3>\n<div id=\"accomodation_questions\" class=\"collapse\">\n<h4>Q: Is there a special off-campus pass for Running Start students?<\/h4>\n<p>Each high school will handle its own policy\/procedure regarding Running Start students.<\/p>\n<h4>Q: How will students get to and from the college campus?<\/h4>\n<p>Students will have to make their own transportation arrangements to get to their college campus.<\/p>\n<h4>Q: Can 504 accommodations be made available to Running Start students at the colleges?<\/h4>\n<p>Yes, but students need to see a college counselor to arrange this.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<h3 style=\"margin-bottom: 0;\"><a style=\"color: #444;\" href=\"#transcript_questions\" data-toggle=\"collapse\">Grades and Transcript Questions<\/a><\/h3>\n<div id=\"transcript_questions\" class=\"collapse\">\n<h4>Q: May a parent of a Running Start student request attendance\/grade information from the college campus?<\/h4>\n<p>Only if the student gives written permission for the parent to do so, by completing a release form provided by the college. Otherwise, all student information is confidential.<\/p>\n<h4>Q: Will the college credit(s) earned through Running Start appear on the high school transcript?<\/h4>\n<p>No. The high school transcript will only reflect the high school equivalent of Running Start credits. For a record of college credits that a student has earned, the student must request transcripts directly from the college.<\/p>\n<h4>Q: Do all colleges and universities accept college credits earned through the Running Start program?<\/h4>\n<p>The courses numbered 100 and above are articulated to the University of Hawai\u02bdi at Manoa, the University of Hawai\u02bdi at Hilo, the University of Hawai\u02bdi-West O\u02bdahu, the University of Hawai\u02bdi Maui College, and all University of Hawai\u02bdi Community colleges.
