Update to macOS 26 (Tahoe) advisory

This is an update to the original macOS 26 Tahoe advisory sent on September 16, 2025:

ITS had previously recommended against upgrading to macOS 26 Tahoe while compatibility with ITS supported software and applications could be tested. ITS has tested Ventura with ITS supported software () and has found no problems with most supported software, as long as the latest versions of the software are being used.

ITS has also tested Tahoe with ITS supported web applications (/itsdocs/717/browser.php?type=mac) and has encountered no problems so far.  As a result, ITS has now adopted support for macOS 26 Tahoe ().

If you decide to upgrade to Tahoe, please make sure that your Mac has the latest versions of any software such as Microsoft Office.  If you depend on any software that is not listed on the ITS supported software page, please check with the software's vendor to make sure it is compatible with Tahoe before updating.  You should also check the ITS supported web applications and make sure the ones you use have been tested as working with Tahoe.  If updating to macOS 26 Tahoe, ITS recommends that you update to the current release version (26.3.1 as of writing).

Apple's list of Mac computers that are compatible with macOS 26 Tahoe can be found here: . Should you decide to upgrade to Tahoe, ITS recommends that your Mac have 16GB of RAM or more and at least 50GB of available hard drive space.  A more recent (2020 or newer) computer with a M1 or better processor is also recommended.

Apple released macOS 26 (Tahoe) on Monday, September 15, 2025. At this time, ITS recommends that Mac users delay upgrading to macOS 26 (Tahoe).

macOS Tahoe is a major update to the macOS operating system, taking it from version 15 to version 26. As has been experienced with previous major updates, there is a possibility that applications, especially older applications, may not be immediately compatible upon release of Tahoe.

This notice will be updated as more information becomes available.

ITS generally recommends against immediately upgrading to the latest version of any operating system when it is first released, until compatibility with ITS supported software can be tested.
