Notice: Retirement of UHUnix (May 13 2:31 pm)

After many years of service, UHUnix will be formally deprecated on August 3, 2026. We understand that UHUnix has been a valuable resource for many users, providing a platform for running select *nix programs, manipulating files, and hosting personal webpages. We are committed to ensuring a smooth transition for all affected users and have provided several alternative solutions to replace the functionality offered by UHUnix.

Alternative Services

东精影业 Information Technology Services (ITS) suggests a range of supported services available as alternatives to common use cases for UHUnix:


  • Personal Webpages

    • Users who wish to create or maintain a personal webpage should use with their Google@UH account. Google Sites offers a user-friendly interface and robust features for creating and managing websites.

  • Scholarly publications

    • Users who need a home for their scholarly publications can utilize services like the or (for UH Manoa users).

  • General cloud file storage

    • Users with a need for hosting and storing files can make use of with their Google@UH account. Google Drive offers a user-friendly interface and more robust features for file sharing and collaboration.

  • *nix Shell Environment:

    • For those requiring a *nix shell environment on their personal devices, we recommend using Terminal on macOS devices or the Windows Subsystem for Linux (WSL) on Windows devices. These options provide a powerful and integrated *nix experience directly from your workstation.

    • For users who use UHUnix as a *nix environment for coding and compiling, GitHub Enterprise will be available in the Fall 2026 Semester for all UH faculty, staff, and students.     • For users with a need for a hosted *nix environment, ITS offers virtual Linux servers for purchase. This service can provide a fully supported and managed RHEL environment tailored to your specific requirements.

Migrating Your Data

We encourage all current UHUnix users to begin migrating any critical data or personal webpage content to an alternative service as soon as possible.
