Extraordinary dedication. Humble leadership. Tireless outreach. Exemplary service. Trusted and beloved librarian. These accolades only begin to describe Matthew Brown, recipient of the 2025 ±į²¹·É²¹¾±Ź»¾± State Public Library Systemās Librarian of the Year Award. He was honored on February 18, 2026, at the annual membership meeting hosted by the Friends of the Library of Hawaiāi in the State Library Courtyard.
A 2012 LIS alumnus, Matt has devoted 12 years of service to the Hawaiāi State Public Library System (HSPLS). He currently serves as Managing Librarian at the Library for the Blind and Print Disabled and previously worked at WahiawÄ Public Library. Matt has also been a District Administrator, overseeing 24 library branches across °æŹ»²¹³ó³Ü and ±į²¹·É²¹¾±Ź»¾± Island.
Matt was also recognized by the Hawaiāi House of Representatives and the City and County of Honolulu for his outstanding leadership and sustained commitment to public service. The patron who nominated Matt shared, āMatt goes above and beyond his duties and responsibilities to anticipate and address the needs of the blind and visually impaired community. He keeps up with the latest devices for braille and audio readers and is truly interested in learning about them.ā
Dr. Andrew Wertheimer, Program Director of the Library and Information Science Graduate Program, also praised Mattās contributions: āMatt is always lending a hand to build bridges between the LIS Program and HSPLS. He helped advance the internship program and is a frequent guest speaker in many classes, where he shares his passion for libraries.ā
In accepting the award, Matt reflected on the collective spirit behind his work: āI am blessed to work alongside an incredible staff, a wonderful cadre of volunteers, and outstanding library leadership in HSPLS who make all things possible. This award truly reflects the remarkable efforts of our library networks across the state and our shared commitment to serving the public. To borrow from Helen Keller, āAlone we can do so little; together we can do so much.āā

Jane Kurahara and Betsy Young, LIS alumnae, who have been long-time volunteers of the Japanese Cultural Center of Hawaiāi (JCCH) and former school librarians, received the prestigious Frank Haines Award presented by the Hawaii Historic Hawaiāi Foundation in recognition of their lifetime commitment to preserving Hawaiāiās heritage. The award was presented on May 27, 2016, at the Pomaikaāi Ballroom at the Dole Cannery Square.
¶«¾«Ó°Ņµ LIS alumnus (2009) is theĀ recipient of a Diversity Research Grant from the . Per aĀ notice in the June 2016 issue of American Libraries Magazine, “recipients receive a one-time $2,500 award to conduct original research over the course of the year.”
Carolyn Kirio, LIS alumna and Kapolei Middle School librarian was selected by The White House for their Great Educators Award. She was recognized at a White House ceremony honoring the National Teacher of the Year, State Teachers of the Year, and Great Educators from across the United States on May 3, 2016.
Diane Mokuau and Michelle Colte received Golden Key Awards from the Hawaii Association of School Librarians (HASL) at the groupās spring conference held on April 30 at Moanalua Middle School Library. The Golden Key Award recognizes school librarians, who have provided exemplary service to the profession.

Linda Lindsay (1991 LIS alumnus) and Michelle Colte (2004 LIS alumnus) were selected for the “Make IT (Instructional Technology) Happen” award at the Schools of the Future Conference held on November 7, 2014, at the Hawaii Convention Center. The Hawaii Society for Technology in Education sponsored the award that recognizes outstanding K-12 educators, who have proactively engaged their schools in innovative technology practices. Linda is the librarian at Seabury Hall on Maui and Michelle is librarian at Hale Kula Elementary on Oahu.
Michelle Colte, 2004 LIS alumni, has been selected 2014 School Librarian of the Year by School Library Journal. Michelle is school librarian at Hale Kula Elementary in Wahiawa. This prestigious award honors K-12 school library professionals for outstanding achievement and exemplary use of 21st-century tools and services. Michelle received a $2,500 cash award and another $2,500 worth of materials from Scholastic Library Publishing, the awardās sponsor.
Dean Louie, a 2011 LIS alumnus, has received tenure as an assistant professor specializing in culinary arts at UH Maui College. He has also been appointed as the Internal Program Coordinator for the Maui Culinary Academy. His duties include teaching a course in purchasing and cost controls, balancing program finances for the Paāina Facility, and leading the culinary arts faculty in setting critical future goals.
