Information Science (MLISc) Degree Program was first accredited by the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.ala.org\/offices\/accreditation\">American Library Association<\/a> (ALA) in 1967 and was re-accredited under new standards in <strong>1974<\/strong>, <strong>1980<\/strong>, <strong>1986<\/strong>, <strong>1994<\/strong>, <strong>2000<\/strong>, <strong>2009<\/strong>, and <strong>2015<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-columns is-layout-flex wp-container-core-columns-is-layout-87beb0d0 wp-block-columns-is-layout-flex\">\n<div class=\"wp-block-column is-layout-flow wp-block-column-is-layout-flow\" style=\"flex-basis:120px\">\n<p class=\"has-text-align-right\"><strong>1987<\/strong><\/p>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-column is-layout-flow wp-block-column-is-layout-flow\">\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote has-medium-font-size is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\" the rapidly changing world of libraries and information technologies and the role of information in society, by officially changing its name to the School of Library and Information Studies (SLIS), offering the Master&#8217;s in Library and Information Studies degree simultaneously.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-columns is-layout-flex wp-container-core-columns-is-layout-87beb0d0 wp-block-columns-is-layout-flex\">\n<div class=\"wp-block-column is-layout-flow wp-block-column-is-layout-flow\" style=\"flex-basis:120px\">\n<p class=\"has-text-align-right\"><strong>1997<\/strong><\/p>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-column is-layout-flow wp-block-column-is-layout-flow\">\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote has-medium-font-size is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\" style=\"margin-top:0;margin-right:0;margin-bottom:0;margin-left:0;padding-top:0;padding-right:0;padding-bottom:0;padding-left:var(--wp--preset--spacing--30)\">\n<p>Effective Fall 1997, SLIS merged with the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ics.hawaii.edu\">Department of Information and Computer Sciences (ICS)<\/a> and again changed its name to the Library and Information Science (LIS) Program.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-columns is-layout-flex wp-container-core-columns-is-layout-87beb0d0 wp-block-columns-is-layout-flex\">\n<div Govenor David Ige and Lieutenant Governor Shan Tsutsui recognized the University of Hawai\u02bbi at M\u0101noa Library and Information Science (LIS) Program by <a href=\"https:\/\/manoa.hawaii.edu\/news\/article.php?aId=7647\">proclaiming September 13 through 19 UH M\u0101noa Library and Information Science Program Week<\/a> in honor of the program\u2019s 50th anniversary.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image aligncenter is-resized wp-image-6199\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"640\" height=\"427\" compete in the world\u2019s dynamic digital environment, evidenced by its transformation from the original Graduate School of Library Studies to to the current LIS Program in the Department of Information and Computer Sciences.&nbsp;As a unit within ICS, LIS benefited from the resources and expertise of ICS students, staff and faculty.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-columns is-layout-flex wp-container-core-columns-is-layout-87beb0d0 wp-block-columns-is-layout-flex\">\n<div class=\"wp-block-column is-layout-flow wp-block-column-is-layout-flow\" style=\"flex-basis:120px\">\n<p class=\"has-text-align-right\"><strong>2019<\/strong><\/p>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-column is-layout-flow wp-block-column-is-layout-flow\">\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote has-medium-font-size is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\" style=\"margin-top:0;margin-right:0;margin-bottom:0;margin-left:0;padding-top:0;padding-right:0;padding-bottom:0;padding-left:var(--wp--preset--spacing--30)\">\n<p>As of February 2019, LIS has graduated 1,730 students, many of whom now serve in public, school, academic and special libraries as well as museum and archives in Hawai\u02bbi, the continental United States and in countries around the world.&nbsp; LIS graduates comprise approximately two-thirds of the professional workforce for information professionals in Hawai\u02bbi, many of them serving in leadership capacities in the UH Libraries, Hawai\u02bbi State Public Library System and the Hawai\u02bbi Department of Education.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-columns is-layout-flex wp-container-core-columns-is-layout-87beb0d0 wp-block-columns-is-layout-flex\">\n<div class=\"wp-block-column is-layout-flow wp-block-column-is-layout-flow\" style=\"flex-basis:120px\">\n<p class=\"has-text-align-right\"><strong>2022<\/strong><\/p>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-column is-layout-flow wp-block-column-is-layout-flow\">\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote has-medium-font-size is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\" style=\"margin-top:0;margin-right:0;margin-bottom:0;margin-left:0;padding-top:0;padding-right:0;padding-bottom:0;padding-left:var(--wp--preset--spacing--30)\">\n<p>On July 1, 2022, LIS joined programs in Communications, Communicology, Journalism and the Spark M. Matsunaga Institute for Peace to form a new School of Communication and Information in the College of Social Sciences. The School&#8217;s working mission is <em>How information flows<\/em>\u2014among people and communities, through media and technologies, and across time and cultures.
