She becomes the first person from\u00a0<span aria-label=\"Hawaii\">Hawai\u02bbi<\/span>\u00a0to hold this position. She will begin her one-year term in August and will become\u00a0<abbr>SAA<\/abbr>\u2019s 78th president in 2023\u201324.<\/p>\n<p>Widely known for her work on cultural competency, Wong Smith is excited to be serving in this new role at\u00a0<abbr>SAA<\/abbr>. \u201cI see it as an opportunity to inform and share with the rest of the country and profession the wealth of resources we have here in the islands, including records reflecting five governments (kingdom, provisional, republic, territory and state) and their impacts on the k\u0101naka maoli and the diverse cultures and communities who selected to make\u00a0<span aria-label=\"Hawaii\">Hawai\u02bbi<\/span>\u00a0their home, and the caliber of archivists, both professional and community, and repositories we possess,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n<p>A product of\u00a0<abbr>东精影业<\/abbr>\u00a0M\u0101noa, Wong holds a bachelor\u2019s degree in\u00a0Hawaiian Studies\u00a0and a master\u2019s in\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/lis\/\">Library and Information Scien<\/a>c<a href=\"https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/lis\/\">e<\/a>. She has served as university archivist at\u00a0<abbr>东精影业<\/abbr>\u00a0M\u0101noa since 2018. Her prior\u00a0<abbr>东精影业<\/abbr>\u00a0positions include researcher at N\u0101 Pua No\u02bbeau: Center for Gifted and Talented Native Hawaiian Children at\u00a0<abbr>东精影业<\/abbr>\u00a0Hilo, recruitment coordinator for the Native Hawaiian Center of Excellence at the\u00a0John A. Burns School of Medicine, Hawaiian Collection Librarian in\u00a0<abbr>东精影业<\/abbr>\u00a0Hilo\u2019s Edwin H. Mookini Library, and Pharmacy &amp; Health Sciences Resources Coordinator at the Daniel K. Inouye School of Pharmacy.<\/p>\n<p>Wong has been involved with\u00a0<abbr>SAA<\/abbr>\u00a0since 2003 and has served in a number of capacities, including her involvement on several committees, being elected to the\u00a0<abbr>SAA<\/abbr>\u00a0council and delivering a number of presentations at the annual conferences. A 2015 plenary address calling for cultural competency training allowed her to develop a workshop she has delivered across the country since 2017.<\/p>\n<p>For more than 35 years, Wong has highlighted Hawaiian collections through research and presentations and has written extensively on Hawaiian cultural resources. In addition to her previous\u00a0<abbr>东精影业<\/abbr>\u00a0appointments, she was also lead archivist for the Pacific Island Network of the National Park Service, cultural specialist for Kamehameha Schools and librarian archivist for the State Historic Preservation Division.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cTeaching cultural competency while at\u00a0<abbr>东精影业<\/abbr>\u00a0Hilo, I recognized how cultural competency can advance the archival profession. This framework has extended to the museum sector through a series of\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/hawaiimuseums.org\/makau\/\">webinars<\/a>\u00a0for the\u00a0<span aria-label=\"Hawaii\">Hawai\u02bbi<\/span>\u00a0Museum Association and to private companies,\u201d Wong said. \u201cIt is an inherent framework\u00a0<span aria-label=\"kamaaina\">kama\u02bb\u0101ina<\/span>\u00a0have utilized to live and work with the diverse cultures living closely together and its employment has proven benefits in multiple sectors such as health services, education and business.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Among Wong\u2019s project highlights as university archivist include the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/guides.library.manoa.hawaii.edu\/c.php?g=1217774\">Mitsuo Aoki Papers<\/a>, which include the collection of the theologian, minister, college professor and founder of\u00a0<abbr>东精影业<\/abbr>\u00a0M\u0101noa\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/religion\/\">Department of Religion<\/a>, and the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/uharchives.wordpress.com\/2020\/04\/23\/new-online-exhibit-the-luciano-minerbi-collection-50-years-of-collaborative-community-activism-through-urban-and-regional-planning\/\">Luciano Minerbi Papers<\/a>, which exceed 50 linear feet and captures the earliest community-based planning activities in the islands.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Text from UH News: https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/2022\/04\/05\/helen-wong-smith-elected-to-saa\/ University of\u00a0Hawai\u02bbi\u00a0at M\u0101noa Library\u00a0Archivist\u00a0Helen Wong Smith\u00a0has been selected as vice president\/president-elect of the\u00a0Society of American Archivists\u00a0(SAA), the oldest and largest national organization of professional archivists in North America.
