The University of Hawaiʻi at Hilo’s awarded its first doctor of nursing degrees at spring commencement on May 16.
The cohort is comprised of 10 students from both the bachelor of science in nursing and master of science in nursing tracks. This is the first class of nursing students to graduate since the school began accepting applications to the doctor of nursing program in 2012.
“Our students receive applied experiences that educates and trains primary healthcare providers who are grounded in community and population-based health promotion that help address health disparities and improve community capacity,” explains Kay Daub, professor of nursing and director of the nursing school.
The late Senator Daniel K. Inouye was behind the program to improve healthcare in Hawaiʻi. These new primary care providers will begin to fill the service gaps across the state.
