I will dearly miss John. I had the unique privilege and unparalleled honor of being John’s second graduate student and I worked under his leadership on both the first FEL at Stanford and the first storage ring FEL at Orsay, France. He was unsurpassed as a dissertation advisor, mentor, principal investigator and leader. Only a few people have influenced my life more. John was unique in both his insight, command of physics, theory, and experimental methods and techniques. When Steven Chu (Nobel laureate and former Secretary of Energy) learned I had been a John Madey graduate student he stated, “John Madey is the smartest physicist I’ve ever met.” Much more than that, John Madey was also very personable, approachable and caring person. He had both genuine concern for others and deep evident love for his family.
