Associate Professor Joseph Bariyanga placed third in his age group (males, age 60 to 64) at the 2017 Boston Marathon.
He ran his personal best of?3 hours, 2 minutes, 8 seconds,?finishing 1,677 overall out of?26,411 race participants.
It was Bariyanga’s third marathon. He also competed in the Honolulu Marathon in 2015 (3:03:27) and the Rwandan Marathon in 2016 (3:17:09).
“My initial (running) goals were to run the three marathons: Honolulu, Rwanda, and Boston,” Bariyanga said. “Now that I have accomplished that I have to focus to something else. However, I would like to return to Boston in the hope that the weather will be cooler to really see where I stand among my age group runners. Also I may run the Honolulu Marathon this year just for promoting healthy living, especially for my students.”
