Author and the musical group will be featured at two free events June 27 and 28. Sobel is the acclaimed author of Longitude: The True Story of a Lone Genius Who Solved the Greatest Scientific Problem of His Time and Galileo’s Daughter: A Historical Memoir of Science, Faith and Love.
June 27, 7:30 p.m.—music, imagery and narrative, with Perpetual Motion: Galileo and His Revolutions. A moving and compelling account of a remarkable moment in the history of science, human thought and music, Perpetual Motion ties together the groundbreaking repertoire of Galileo’s day with narration by acclaimed best-selling science writer Dava Sobel, and images of Earth and the cosmos. This performance features Sarah Pillow, soprano and Mary-Anne Ballard, viola da gamba, with guests Daniel Swenberg, lute and theorbo and Marc Wagnon, video artist.
June 28, 7:30 p.m.—Sobel will be speaking about her new book, The Glass Universe: How the Ladies of the Harvard Observatory Took the Measure of the Stars, which tells the story of the women who worked at the Harvard College Observatory from the late 1800s through the mid-1900s. Glass Universe was named one of the best books of the month by numerous magazines and media outlets.
