University of Hawaiʻi at Mānoa junior Anson Cabello gained valuable experience on the world golf stage at the Sony Open in Hawaiʻi, closing his first PGA Tour appearance with a strong second-round performance at Waiʻalae Country Club, January 15 and 16.

The Kahului, Maui native finished the tournament with rounds of 77 and 71 to post an 8-over par total, missing the weekend cut. Cabello earned his spot in the field by winning a local qualifier in November. Cabello’s caddie was fellow teammate Nathan Szpakowicz.

“It was so cool,” Cabello said. “This week didn鈥檛 turn out the way I had hoped, but the whole experience with my caddie, my teammate—that was big. Just being able to experience this kind of event just means the world because there aren鈥檛 that many opportunities for me to do this鈥opefully more in the future.”

After a challenging opening round that included seven bogeys, Cabello responded in the second round. After starting with bogeys on holes 1 and 2, he settled in quickly, carding birdies on holes 3, 6, 8 and 9 to turn at 2-under par for the round. Cabello battled on the back nine to finish the day with a 1-over par 71.

“I’m not going to lie, after those first two holes I thought I was going to shoot 80. I mean, to come back and start making solid swings down the stretch, it was big,” Cabello said. “Yesterday, that kind of happened and just couldn’t get anything going. After that start and the way I finished, couldn鈥檛 be more proud of myself.”

Cabello became the seventh Rainbow Warrior to qualify for a PGA Tour event. He followed Blaze Akana, who competed in the tournament in 2023 and 2024.

In his third season with the Rainbow Warriors, Cabello is enjoying his best collegiate campaign to date. During the fall portion of the 2025–26 season, he averaged a team-best 70.33 strokes per round, shooting par or better in eight of nine rounds. His 10-under 203 finish at the Kāʻanapali Classic by OUTRIGGER tied for the second-lowest 54-hole score in program history.

The Rainbow Warriors return to collegiate competition February 5-7 at the Amer Ari Intercollegiate in Waimea, Hawaiʻi.

Zoar Nedd on the basketball court.

The is joining the Mountain West Conference as a full member effective July 1, 2026. Travel subsidies for conference opponents will be phased out as part of the new membership and the exit fee from the Big West Conference will be covered. Since 2012, 东精影业 has been competing in the Mountain West in football and in the Big West for most of its other 尘别苍鈥檚 and wo尘别苍鈥檚 sports teams.

Kate Lang setting a volleyball

“The University of Hawaiʻi is honored to accept full membership in the Mountain West Conference, marking a pivotal moment in our athletic program’s history.” said 东精影业 President David Lassner. “While we are sad to leave so many amazing colleagues and competitors in the Big West, this expanded partnership will build on our strong football relationship and securely position us to thrive with our Mountain West colleagues in the incredibly dynamic landscape of intercollegiate athletics. The move will also help strengthen our overall finances.”

The addition of 东精影业 as a full member of the conference gives the Mountain West eight full-time members, meeting the NCAA minimum requirement to be a Division I conference. The move comes after five schools announced in September that they are leaving the conference in 2026 and the University of Texas El Paso (UTEP) accepted an offer to join the Mountain West. The conference announced on September 26 that remaining schools signed a memorandum of understanding, affirming their current commitment to the conference and formally agreeing to negotiating and executing a six year media rights contract that would begin in July 2026.

“We are thrilled to welcome the University of Hawaiʻi to the Mountain West as a full-time member,” said MW Commissioner Gloria Nevarez. “Hawaiʻi has been a tremendous football-only member since 2012, and we鈥檙e excited to add their incredible national brand across all MW sports. As the flagship institution on the islands, with extraordinary academics and a celebrated athletics tradition, we look forward to providing their student-athletes with exceptional educational and athletic experiences.”

Beginning with the 2026–27 seasons, Hawaiʻi will compete in 15 conference-sponsored sports in the Mountain West. Women’s sports include basketball, cross country, golf, indoor and outdoor track & field, soccer, softball, swimming & diving, tennis and volleyball. Men’s sports include basketball, baseball, football, golf, and tennis. The Mountain West does not sponsor beach volleyball, men’s volleyball, men’s swimming & diving, and women’s water polo. A formal decision on where those 东精影业 teams will compete will be determined in the coming months. 东精影业鈥檚 co-ed and wo尘别苍鈥檚 sailing teams will continue their affiliation with the Pacific Coast Collegiate Sailing Conference.

“This is a momentous day for University of Hawaiʻi Athletics,” said 东精影业 Athletics Director Craig Angelos. “We鈥檝e had the privilege of being a football-only member in the Mountain West for the last dozen years. Now the majority of our sports will enjoy the same experience of competing in this exceptional conference. Joining the Mountain West allows us to renew some historic rivalries, creates opportunities for increased exposure and provides stability in the constantly-evolving world of collegiate athletics.”

State leaders say they support the conference realignment.

“I鈥檓 encouraged that community leaders and the University of Hawaiʻi President and Athletics Director are on the same page with the current proposal to fully join the Mountain West Conference,” said Hawaiʻi Gov. Josh Green. “We are optimistic about moving forward with the MWC as it is a conference that we are familiar with, and will position 东精影业 athletics well moving forward.”

“As a proud University of Hawaiʻi alum, former player and coach, I have a deep connection to this institution and its future,” said Honolulu Mayor Rick Blangiardi. “While I respect the decision to remain in the Mountain West Conference, I personally would have liked to see 东精影业 explore opportunities with the newly restructured Pac-12. However, I trust that 东精影业 leadership has made this decision with the best interests of the university and our community in mind, and I will continue to support them in representing Hawaiʻi with pride and strength.”

东精影业 M膩noa is the only Division I athletics program in Hawaiʻi with approximately 500 student-athletes on 22 teams. The school became a member of the NCAA in 1946 and joined its first major intercollegiate conference in 1979. 东精影业 boasts six team national championships and 11 individual national champions in its history.

The other Mountain West Conference members as of July 2026 will be the United States Air Force Academy; University of Nevada, Reno; University of New Mexico; San José State University; University of Nevada, Las Vegas; the University of Wyoming; and UTEP.

The University of Hawaiʻi at M膩noa was well-represented at the 115th Manoa Cup, as 东精影业 golfer Josh Hayashida beat teammate Anson Cabello in dramatic fashion in the June 22 final at Oʻahu Country Club. By taking down Cabello, Hayashida successfully defended his title from last year鈥檚 Manoa Cup.

“It鈥檚 kinda cool playing against a teammate. We both know each other鈥檚 game so well,” Hayashida said. “We both play here all the time, so there鈥檚 no clear advantage over each other. Last year, I knew I had a slight advantage over Kihei (Akina) because he hadn鈥檛 played here that much, and you really need to know how to play here (Oʻahu Country Club). It鈥檚 a cool feeling knowing someone from 东精影业 was going to win. In the end, 东精影业 wins.”

The last time the open division featured an all-东精影业 final was 1995.

“To have two 东精影业 players battle it out for the championship on this amazing field is something really special,” Cabello added. “It really speaks to (东精影业 尘别苍鈥檚 golf head coach) Scott (Simpson) and how he鈥檚 built this program and it also speaks to our players and how we鈥檙e able to fight through adversity, fight through a lot of stuff and make it this far.”

东精影业 golfer Blaze Akana qualified for his second straight Sony Open.

senior Blaze Akana started 2024 competing in his second straight PGA Tour Sony Open in Hawaiʻi at Waiʻalae Country Club. Akana, who is in his final year on the 东精影业 men驶s golf team, failed to make the weekend cut but gained invaluable experience as one of two amateurs in the field alongside 142 of the world鈥檚 top professionals.

“Every time I get to step foot in a PGA Tour event is a great experience. I try to use it as a confidence going forward just knowing that I’m able to hit some shots under this amount of pressure with the big crowds watching,” Akana said. “The support was great this year. Pretty much all my teammates came out. Bunch of my family members came out to watch basically the whole 18.”

Akana鈥檚 best round came on Friday, January 12. The Honolulu native began on the 10th and made a solid birdie on the tough par-3 11th. He turned in 2-over par 37, before carding a bogey on the 4th. He then posted a great bounce-back birdie on the demanding 468-yard par-4 6th after sticking his approach to five feet, then reached the par-5 9th in two shots en route to a two-putt birdie and a 1-over 71.

Akana opened the tournament in the afternoon wave of the first round on Thursday, January 11. Conditions were tough as winds were blowing from the west, opposite the normal trade winds, at 15–20 miles per hour with gusts into the 30s. Akana bogeyed four of his first eight holes before carding a birdie on the par-5 9th. He really couldn鈥檛 get anything going on the back nine, posting five bogeys to shoot a first-round 79.

The Kamehameha Schools-Kap膩lama alumnus earned an exemption into the Sony Open after winning a local qualifier shooting 66 at Waiʻalae CC in November 2023. Of the 12 players in the qualifier, eight were 东精影业 golfers: Akana, James Whitworth, Kolbe Irei, Dane Watanabe, Zachary Sagayaga, Joshua Hayashida, Tyler Ogawa and Anson Cabello.

At the 2023 Sony Open, the Honolulu native missed the cut by just five shots after carding rounds of 71 and 72.

Akana currently leads the Rainbow Warriors with a 70.67 scoring average this season, shooting under par in five of 12 rounds including three in the 60s. The spring schedule begins Feb. 8–10 with the Amer Ari Intercollegiate in Waimea, Hawaiʻi.

Akana shot a 1-over 71 in the first round and a 2-over 72 in the second round. Despite missing the cut in his first appearance in a PGA Tour event, Akana saw several bright spots at Waiʻalae Country Club including carding birdies on some of the most difficult holes on the golf course. Akana birdied the first and second holes in the first round (his 10th and 11th of the day since he started on the back nine), which are a pair of demanding par fours. He also added a birdie on the 13th hole, a near 500-yard par four, in the second round. In total, Akana racked up eight birdies, which were offset by 11 bogeys to finish the 36 holes at 3-over.

Akana was one of two amateurs in the elite field, meaning they could not earn prize money. He joined the likes of 东精影业 M膩noa alumni Jared Sawada, Brandan Kop, T.J. Kua and David Saka to play in the Sony Open as an amateur.

The Honolulu native secured an exemption into the Sony Open via an 18-hole qualifier, which featured the top 12 ranked Hawaiʻi amateur golfers in 2022. Akana shot a 3-under 69 at Waiʻalae Country Club last November to beat out UCLA commit Luciano Conlan and ʻIolani School senior Dane Watanabe by one shot. Also competing in the event were current 东精影业 M膩noa golfers Joshua Hayashida and Tyler Ogawa, and 东精影业 M膩noa alumnus Shawn Sakoda. The tournament has granted an annual sponsor’s exemption into the Sony Open to a top Hawaiʻi amateur since 1995.

Early season success

Akana, a 2020 Kamehameha Schools Kap膩lama graduate, played in all three of 东精影业鈥檚 fall tournaments, tallying his best finish in a tie-for-19th at the Bill Cullum Invitational in October 2022. It was at the tournament in Valencia, California where he also carded his low round of the fall season, a 4-under 68 in the second round.

Akana returned home to play for the Rainbow Warriors after spending two seasons at Sacramento State. Over both years, he competed in 11 of the team鈥檚 12 tournaments, compiling a 73.6 scoring average and was named second team all-Big Sky in 2021–22.

Student-athletes at the University of Hawaiʻi at Mānoa have consistently shown strong performances in the classroom. This year, their rankings by the NCAA showed off impressive scores near an all-time high with eight of the 18 teams each scoring a perfect 1,000.

东精影业 Mānoa scored a 980 overall, which is just shy of its record 986 in the 2020–21 academic year. The Academic Performance Rate (APR) scores were released by the NCAA on June 14.

The wo尘别苍鈥檚 teams posting perfect scores were basketball, golf, softball, soccer, swimming and diving, and tennis. The 尘别苍鈥檚 teams that scored 1,000 were golf, and swimming and diving.

The APR is calculated based on the number of student-athletes on scholarship and those who are retained and remain eligible for competition. Teams with a four-year score below 930 or a 950 average over the most recent two years, can be penalized by a loss of scholarships and post-season ban. For the 14th consecutive year, no 东精影业 Mānoa team was penalized with the loss of scholarships.

The NCAA Committee on Academic Performance instituted the APR data requirements beginning in the 2003–04 academic year. The benchmark of 930 projects to an NCAA Graduation Success Rate of approximately 50%. The overall goal of measuring APRs is to encourage improved academic performance and help institutional administrators examine admission policies, retention and graduation rates, and improve academic support for student-athletes. Only student-athletes on scholarship are factored into the APR scores.

东精影业 fields 21 intercollegiate sports programs, however, the NCAA‘s APR only includes 18 as indoor and outdoor track and field are counted as one score and coed and women’s sailing are non-NCAA sports.
