A $57-million renovation of a University of Hawaiʻi at 惭腻苍辞补 library built in 1956 will transform the four-story, 115,000-square-foot building into a state-of-the-art Student Success Center. Work on the major renovation project began in June 2023 and is expected to be completed in 2026.

The Student Success Center will be a vibrant hub of student activity that will encourage students to stay on campus, between classes and after hours. Three floors of the air conditioned building will be open space for student gathering, studying and socializing with comfortable seating, tables and ample electrical outlets. There will also be more than 30 conference rooms of various sizes for group study along with on-site academic advising departments, a computer lab and Student Store for food and beverages.

“This state-of-the-art center will have a significant impact on the student experience at 东精影业 惭腻苍辞补,” said 东精影业 惭腻苍辞补 Provost Michael Bruno, an early champion of the project. “It will be very exciting when it opens as students will have a brand new facility where they can study, collaborate, learn from one another, take advantage of convenient academic services, grab a coffee and just be with each other.”

The Student Success Center will be located next to Hemenway Hall, close to the Campus Center and the Warrior Recreation Center. It is also next to the campus鈥檚 main city bus stop and right across University Avenue from the , the entrepreneurship center/student housing facility opening in fall 2023.

“We really want to create an environment and a place where students can thrive, and I think that鈥檚 really what is most important for us in this collaboration,” said Aaron Yamasaki, vice president division manager at Swinerton Builders, the Design Builder. “This is Hawaiʻi鈥檚 university and we want to make this great school even better and this project will do just that.”

The project includes a rooftop photovoltaic system to generate renewable energy and help as the renovation project strives to be LEED Silver certified. A modest step towards meeting the 10-campus system驶s goal of zero carbon emissions by 2035.

The center will house the College of Social Sciences Digital Studios and feature a large study space on the first floor that can host and livestream campus events.

The building became available for the renovation project after the agreed to relocate staff and materials in the now closed Sinclair Library to Hamilton Library.

“They embraced the challenge and worked with multiple academic units reviewing and assessing the materials,” said Bruno about the library鈥檚 leadership and staff. “We could not have done this without their cooperation.”

Building on success

The 东精影业 Office of Project Delivery is responsible for the project and for making sure it finishes on time and on budget. The office oversees Capital Improvement Projects large and small, including the Isabella Aiona Abbott Life Sciences Building that opened in 2020 and the expansion of the Clarence T.C. Ching Athletics Complex.

“A center for students was identified as one of the campus鈥檚 biggest needs and now it is our responsibility to turn that idea into a reality,” said Brandon Shima, Design Manager for the Office of Project Delivery.

Like the Abbott Life Sciences Building, the Student Success Center is a design-build project, where there is a fixed sum, single contract for the design and construction. Design-build projects are more likely to be completed on time and with fewer cost overruns, compared to the typical design-bid-build process. It is one of the many national best practices for capital improvement projects adopted by 东精影业 along with hiring highly qualified project managers and construction procurement specialists.

“We need to demonstrate to the State of Hawaiʻi that every dollar invested in 东精影业 will be spent efficiently and effectively,” said 东精影业 Vice President for Administration Jan Gouveia. “We thank the state Legislature and the governor鈥檚 office for its support and know that we have to continue to prove that university projects are worth funding.”

Following the 6-year CIP plan

The Abbott Life Sciences Building and the Student Success Center were among the goals in the 2016 6-year CIP plan approved by the 东精影业 Board of Regents. The plan continues to deliver on many of its stated goals including a new $70-million, five-story facility planned for McCarthy Mall. The building will feature modern classroom and work spaces with construction scheduled to begin in 2024. The BOR approved a new 6-year CIP plan in November 2022 that aims to build on the previous plan and create more modern space-efficient facilities and outdoor spaces that leverage 东精影业 惭腻苍辞补鈥檚 unique sense of place.

A $41 million transformation project to revamp Sinclair Library into a state-of-the-art student success center is closer to becoming reality. The project is expected to be completed by fall 2024, with construction set to begin by the end of 2022.

东精影业 officials will shortlist three design-build project finalists by the end of November and award the contract to the best value team in March 2022. By winter 2022, current Sinclair Library occupants will be relocated around campus to allow construction to begin. The center is expected to be open for use by fall 2024. Funding for the student success center was approved in the 2019–20 fiscal year.

Many helping hands joined together to assist the staff of the University of Hawaiʻi at 惭腻苍辞补鈥檚 Sinclair Library move their entire collection of books and artifacts to Hamilton Library. Among the materials transported are 500 of the best moving images of Hawaiʻi and the Pacific, an extensive music collection and a recording of Martin Luther King Jr. speaking at Andrews Amphitheater.

The move took place over the last year, beginning with the music print collection, and will soon continue with the relocation of other materials, such as journals and serials.

“For the dedicated librarians and staff, many of whom spent most of their careers at 东精影业 in the Sinclair Library, it was home. They were a tight knit group who worked tirelessly to support the students,” said University Librarian Clement Guthro. “While Sinclair is no more, these individuals, now in Hamilton, bring their same level of dedication and commitment to students and faculty. They enrich the Hamilton family.”

The transition is part of preparations for the conversion of Sinclair Library into a student success center. The success center鈥檚 funding was approved in the 2019–2020 fiscal year, assisting in the future establishment of study and collaboration spaces for students in addition to academic advising and tutoring.

Sinclair Library became a more student-focused center in 2006. To commemorate their 50th anniversary, Sinclair created and collaborated with the 东精影业 惭腻苍辞补 , which then marked the start of 24/7 access of the library for the late-night studiers.

On December 20, 2019, Sinclair officially closed their doors as a library service. The transformation into a Student Success Center continues.

More history of Sinclair

Ideas for the creation of Sinclair Library began in 1953 to provide more space for the University Library Collection that was housed in George Hall Addition. In 1956, Sinclair Library was completed and created a study space for students while storing the ever-growing University Library Collection. However, due to the growing collection, Hamilton Library was constructed and half of the collection was then carried over to Hamilton.

In the 80s and 90s, Sinclair became more digitized. With the dedication of The Harry C. & Nee Chang Wong Audiovisual Center on the third floor, the installation of the Hawaiʻi Interactive Television System鈥檚 transmission equipment, the establishment of the Computerized Learning and Information Center and the creation of a university statewide computer system, Sinclair began to grow rapidly through technology and built interisland connections with all 东精影业 system campuses.

The following two decades experienced a surge in technology. In 2001, the Web gateway Hawaii Voyager was developed, hosting an online catalog with records of all 东精影业 System Libraries, Bishop Museum Library and Archives, and Hawaiʻi Medical Library and Hawaiʻi State Archives. In 2010, older videos and tapes that focused on Hawaiian and Pacific collections were converted into digital recordings and made accessible on streaming services. In the following year, a photovoltaic system was incorporated, providing clean energy power to Sinclair. The library also launched a new, updated computer system in 2019.

The 鈥檚 plans to transform into a state-of-the-art student success center has taken a significant step closer to become a reality. The Hawaiʻi State Legislature has approved the $41 million funding request by 东精影业 and Gov. David Ige for the center.

“We thank the governor for supporting the vision by including in his budget.” said 东精影业 Vice President for Budget and Finance Kalbert Young. “The center will greatly improve the 惭腻苍辞补 student experience by providing contemporary spaces for studying and collaboration, along with easy access to academic advising and campus services, in one centralized location.”

东精影业 administrators say state lawmakers have thoroughly reviewed the project, which was a top priority for the university.

“We want to especially recognize the lawmakers and their staff for their commitment to being part of the solution,” said 东精影业 Vice President for Administration Jan Gouveia. “They spent the necessary time and effort to work with us to understand our challenges and greatest needs.”

The governor still has to officially approve the request with the funding likely to be released in the next six months during the 2019–2020 fiscal year. However, planning is already underway thanks to a previous $700,000 state appropriation. Internal meetings have begun, and meetings with stakeholders are expected to begin in the next month. The purpose is to create a clear vision of the elements needed for a successful student center. The renovation work is expected to begin by the end of next year and take about two years to complete.

The project will convert Sinclair Library into a vibrant hub of student interaction with modern, comfortable spaces that encourages students to remain on campus in between classes and after hours for individual study, group study, academic advising and tutoring, and much more.

Sinclair Library, adjacent to Hemenway Hall, Campus Center and the Warrior Recreation Center, is in a prime location for a student success center, making it the perfect candidate to undergo modernization and deliver the type of space needed to keep 东精影业 惭腻苍辞补 competitive with other universities.

A complete recap of the 2019 legislative session by Vice President Young will be posted the week of May 6.

The planning has already begun with a $700,000 state appropriation, and Gov. David Ige has included the university鈥檚 $41 million request for the project in his proposed budget to the state Legislature. Upcoming meetings will be held with university stakeholders including faculty, staff and students to develop goals and create a vision of the elements a student success center should incorporate.

When completed, Sinclair Library will be converted into a modern, inviting and efficient space that encourages students to remain on campus in between classes and after hours; converting that corner of campus into a vibrant hub of student interaction. Students will find a comprehensive environment to study individually, collaborate in groups, seek advising/tutoring and find information on transferring in and out of the university.

“This is a really exciting project because it supports our students directly,” said Jan Gouveia, 东精影业 vice president for administration. “We鈥檙e all really excited to get this thing going, and it will have a fresh look, but embody the feel of the campus. We want it to be a safe, innovative and exciting place for students to hang out with each other.”

Sinclair Library, adjacent to Hemenway Hall, Campus Center and the Warrior Recreation Center, is in a prime location for a student success center, making it the perfect candidate to undergo modernization and deliver the type of space needed to keep 东精影业 Mānoa competitive with other universities.

“Our discussions with faculty, staff and students have all pointed to the need for a modern, collaborative space in which students can learn from our advisors, and from each other,” said Vice Chancellor for Research and Interim Vice Chancellor for Academic Affairs Michael Bruno. “The 惭腻苍辞补 community is very excited about this project.”

With the increase of video-conferencing, on-demand video learning and access to online resource materials, the library鈥檚 historical function as a repository for books and reference materials continues to diminish. Sinclair Library鈥檚 future role as a student success center requires reconfiguring the spaces vacated by books to accommodate the current student demographic and demands for flexible learning opportunities.

“University Librarian Monica Ghosh embraced the modern way of viewing library spaces to be more student centric,” said Gouveia. “She was instrumental in developing the vision of consolidating all of the books into Hamilton Library and free up that space to transform Sinclair into a student-dedicated center.”

“Our Facilities team and in particular our Library team have been fantastic partners every step of the way,” said Bruno.
