Richardson School of Law<\/a> at the <a href=\"https:\/\/manoa.hawaii.edu\/\">University of <span aria-label=\"Hawaii\">Hawai&#699;i<\/span> at M&#257;noa<\/a> opened its doors to a strikingly diverse class of 120 students this fall.<\/p>\n<p>The incoming class includes 80 students who are residents of <span aria-label=\"Hawaii\">Hawai&#699;i<\/span> or who have significant connections to the state. Of the total number of juris doctor candidates, 67 are women.<\/p>\n<p>Members of the class include two medical doctors; middle and high school teachers, including one from Bolivia; and an airline flight attendant, social worker, data analyst, accountant, stock trader and financial planning company owner.<\/p>\n<p>The new students engaged in orientation activities planned by Associate Deans <strong>Ronette Kawakami<\/strong> and <strong>Denise Antolini<\/strong>, including taking the law student pledge in a ceremony at the <span aria-label=\"Hawaii\">Hawai&#699;i<\/span> Supreme Court building administered by Chief Justice Mark Recktenwald.<\/p>\n<p>For the first time, students were joined by their parents and close friends. Associate Professor <strong>Troy J.H. Andrade<\/strong>, who is the director of the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.law.hawaii.edu\/ulu-lehua-scholars-program\">Ulu Lehua Scholars program<\/a>, offered an overview of <span aria-label=\"Hawaii\">Hawai&#699;i<\/span> history and its connection to the school&#8217;s namesake, the late Chief Justice William S. Richardson.<\/p>\n<p>&ldquo;The heart of this school is the students,&rdquo; said Recktenwald, who praised the law faculty and outstanding leadership of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.law.hawaii.edu\/about-us\/message-dean\">Dean <strong>Avi Soifer<\/strong><\/a>. &ldquo;I encourage you to embrace that commitment to service and I am confident you will make the world a more just place. You are heirs to the legacy of <abbr title=\"Chief Justice\">CJ<\/abbr> Richardson, a great lawyer and a great person.&rdquo;<\/p>\n<p>As the school&#8217;s third-largest class, the incoming students include:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>83 full-time law students<\/li>\n<li>20 part-time evening program students<\/li>\n<li>3 transfer students<\/li>\n<li>1 visiting student<\/li>\n<li>2 advanced <abbr title=\"Juris Doctor\">JD<\/abbr> students (foreign attorneys who may practice in the U.S. after passing a state bar exam)<\/li>\n<li>2 doctor of juridical science students<\/li>\n<li>8 master of law students<\/li>\n<li>1 exchange student<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>See the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.law.hawaii.edu\/article\/diverse-incoming-uh-law-school-class-enjoys-new-experiences-during-orientation-week\">full story on the law school website<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p><em>&#8212;By Beverly Creamer<\/em><\/p>\n<p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>The incoming fall class of the William S.
