After his passing on April 1, 2018, his family established an endowed scholarship to honor his work and to benefit masters candidates at <abbr title=\"东精影业\">东精影业<\/abbr> M\u0101noa whose research interests focus on the literatures and languages of Oceania (Pacific islands, including <span aria-label=\"Hawaii\">Hawai&#699;i<\/span> and Aotearoa).<\/p>\n<p>The recipients of the inaugural <a href=\"https:\/\/giving.uhfoundation.org\/funds\/20795703\">2019 Paul Lyons Scholarship<\/a> are: <strong>Romy Courat<\/strong>, <abbr title=\"Master of Arts\">MA<\/abbr> student in the French division of the Department of Languages and Literatures of Europe and the Americas, and <strong>Andrew Gumataotao<\/strong>, <abbr>MA<\/abbr> student in ethnomusicology at <abbr>东精影业<\/abbr> M\u0101noa. Courat is conducting research on contemporary Tahitian literature and its representations of metropolitan France. Gumataotao is part of a research group documenting Chamoru language, and his scholarly work focuses on Guam&#8217;s musical traditions. Each recipient was awarded $1,000 to further their research.<\/p>\n<p>Courat and Gumataotao will be honored on December 13, at an English department reception.<\/p>\n<h2>More about Lyons<\/h2>\n<figure id=\"attachment_82177\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-82177\" style=\"width: 300px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/07\/manoa-lyons-p-300x169.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"169\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-82177\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/07\/manoa-lyons-p-300x169.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/07\/manoa-lyons-p-630x353.jpg 630w, https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/07\/manoa-lyons-p.jpg 676w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-82177\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Paul Lyons<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Lyons joined the <abbr>东精影业<\/abbr> M\u0101noa <a href=\"http:\/\/english.hawaii.edu\/\">English department<\/a> in 1991, after earning his <abbr title=\"Bachelor of Arts\">BA<\/abbr> from Hobart and William Smith Colleges in New York, his <abbr>MA<\/abbr> from the University of Michigan and a <abbr title=\"Doctor of Philosophy\">PhD<\/abbr> from the University of North Carolina.<\/p>\n<p>Hired as a scholar of 19<sup>th<\/sup> century American literature, he was also an accomplished creative writer, having already published his first two novels, <em>Table Legs<\/em> in 1988 and <em>Going for Broke<\/em> in 1991. <em>Button Man<\/em>, a third novel, was published in 2004.<\/p>\n<p>Over the course of his career, Lyons developed a profound commitment to <span aria-label=\"Hawaii\">Hawai&#699;i<\/span> and the Pacific, which was increasingly reflected in his scholarship. His many published essays include studies of local writers such as John Dominis Holt, <strong>Gary Pak<\/strong>, Wayne <span aria-label=\"Kaumualii\">Kaumuali&#699;i<\/span> Westlake and Richard Hamasaki, as well as classic American literary figures.
