Macleod photographed for &ldquo;On Duty, Off Duty&rdquo; Exhibit (2012&#8211;2013)<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>The <a href=\"http:\/\/manoa.hawaii.edu\/library\/\">University of <span aria-label=\"Hawaii\">Hawai&#699;i<\/span> at M\u0101noa Library<\/a> is playing a major role in <em>Hawaii: 150 Years of Japanese Migration and Histories of Dream Islands<\/em>, a groundbreaking exhibit at the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.rekihaku.ac.jp\/english\/\">National Museum of Japanese History<\/a> in Chiba, Japan. About 50 items, including rare documents and photos, from the <abbr title=\"东精影业\">东精影业<\/abbr> M\u0101noa Library archives, Hawaiian and Asia collections are part of the exhibit on display from October 29 to December 26, 2019.<\/p>\n<p>The first organized voyage that brought Japanese laborers to <span aria-label=\"Hawaii\">Hawai&#699;i<\/span>, known as the &lsquo;Gannenmono,&rsquo; was in 1868 and that is where the exhibit starts. It traces <span aria-label=\"Hawaii\">Hawai&#699;i<\/span> from the pre-modern to modern period from various historical perspectives: from the experiences of migration and war, to images of paradise dream islands, as well as the perspective of the Kingdom and that of Native Hawaiians, according to the museum.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_105386\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-105386\" style=\"width: 250px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/10\/manoa-library-rekihaku-3.jpg\" alt=\"Searchlights Over Oahu\" width=\"250\" height=\"252\" class=\"size-full wp-image-105386\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/10\/manoa-library-rekihaku-3.jpg 250w, https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/10\/manoa-library-rekihaku-3-130x130.jpg 130w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 250px) 100vw, 250px\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-105386\" class=\"wp-caption-text\"><em>Searchlights Over Oahu<\/em>, charcoal on paper (c.1941) by Alexander S.
