  {"id":105549,"date":"2019-10-29T16:35:46","date_gmt":"2019-10-30T02:35:46","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/?p=105549"},"modified":"2019-10-30T14:15:50","modified_gmt":"2019-10-31T00:15:50","slug":"kalaupapa-exhibit-at-windward-cc","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/2019\/10\/29\/kalaupapa-exhibit-at-windward-cc\/","title":{"rendered":"Kalaupapa historical exhibit opens at Windward <abbr title=\"Community College\">CC<\/abbr> Library"},"content":{"rendered":"<span class=\"span-reading-time rt-reading-time\" style=\"display: block;\"><span class=\"rt-label rt-prefix\">Reading time: <\/span> <span class=\"rt-time\"> 2<\/span> <span class=\"rt-label rt-postfix\">minutes<\/span><\/span><p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/10\/windward-library-kalaupapa-1-1.jpg\" alt=\"exhibit panel from kalaupapa exhibit\" width=\"676\" height=\"381\" class=\"alignleft size-full wp-image-105594\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/10\/windward-library-kalaupapa-1-1.jpg 676w, https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/10\/windward-library-kalaupapa-1-1-130x73.jpg 130w, https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/10\/windward-library-kalaupapa-1-1-300x169.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 676px) 100vw, 676px\" \/><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/windward.hawaii.edu\/\">Windward Community College<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.kalaupapaohana.org\">Ka <span aria-label=\"Ohana\">&#699;Ohana<\/span> O Kalaupapa<\/a> open <em>A Source of Light, Constant and Never Fading<\/em>, a historical exhibit about the strong relationship between the Royal Family of <span aria-label=\"Hawaii\">Hawai&#699;i<\/span> and the people of Kalaupapa, along with other often forgotten chapters of the history of Kalaupapa.<\/p>\n<p>The exhibit will launch on November 6 at Hale <span aria-label=\"Laakea\">La&#699;akea<\/span> Library Learning Commons on the Windward <abbr title=\"Community College\">CC<\/abbr> campus and will run through late February.<\/p>\n<p><em>A Source of Light, Constant and Never Fading<\/em> uses 12 double-sided panels to feature historical and modern photographs, letters from the early residents of Kalaupapa, quotes from the <span aria-label=\"alii\">ali&#699;i<\/span> and the people of Kalaupapa, mele and other historical events often left out of traditional histories.<\/p>\n<p>Ka <span aria-label=\"Ohana\">&#699;Ohana<\/span> O Kalaupapa is a nonprofit organization founded by the residents of Kalaupapa, their family members\/descendants and friends of the community. The <span aria-label=\"ohana\">&#699;ohana<\/span> is dedicated to honoring and remembering each of the nearly 8,000 people who were taken from their families and isolated on the Kalaupapa peninsula due to government policies regarding leprosy.<\/p>\n<h2>Exhibit events information<\/h2>\n<figure id=\"attachment_105547\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-105547\" style=\"width: 250px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/10\/windward-library-kalaupapa-2.jpg\" alt=\"exhibit panel on queen kapiolani\" width=\"250\" height=\"350\" class=\"size-full wp-image-105547\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/10\/windward-library-kalaupapa-2.jpg 250w, https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/10\/windward-library-kalaupapa-2-93x130.jpg 93w, https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/10\/windward-library-kalaupapa-2-214x300.jpg 214w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 250px) 100vw, 250px\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-105547\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">On December 2, there will be a presentation about how three queens responded.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p><strong>November 6, 5:30&#8211;6:30 p.m.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Valerie Monson from Ka <span aria-label=\"Ohana\">&#699;Ohana<\/span> O Kalaupapa will introduce the exhibit at the opening reception, share the Ka <span aria-label=\"Ohana\">&#699;Ohana<\/span> mission and its current projects and give a walking tour of the exhibit. Relatives of Kalaupapa residents have been invited. The reception is free and the public is welcome to attend.
