On December 4, <a href=\"http:\/\/culinary.kapiolani.hawaii.edu\/\"><span aria-label=\"Kapiolani\">Kapi&#699;olani<\/span> Community College Culinary Arts and Culinology<\/a> and <a href=\"http:\/\/www.leeward.hawaii.edu\/culn\">Leeward Community College Culinary Arts<\/a> students competed in the &ldquo;On the Line&rdquo; entr&#233;e competition at the <a href=\"http:\/\/uhcc.hawaii.edu\/culinary\/index.php\">Culinary Institute of the Pacific<\/a>. <\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/7elevenhawaii.com\/\">7-Eleven <span aria-label=\"Hawaii\">Hawai&#699;i<\/span><\/a> partnered with <span aria-label=\"Kapiolani\">Kapi&#699;olani<\/span> <abbr title=\"Community College\">CC<\/abbr> and Leeward <abbr>CC<\/abbr> to develop a better-for-you entr&#233;e that may potentially be sold at all 7-Eleven <span aria-label=\"Hawaii\">Hawai&#699;i<\/span> locations for a limited time in 2020. This competition supports the local agriculture industry and local culinary talent, as well as enables the students to apply their culinary knowledge and technical skills to develop a new food product. <\/p>\n<p>Eight finalists put their best food forward. <\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Ritchie Wong<\/strong> (<span aria-label=\"Kapiolani\">Kapi&#699;olani<\/span>)-Mapo Tofu Udon <\/li>\n<li><strong>Ranie Ranga<\/strong> (Leeward)-Tofu Kabocha Stir Fry <\/li>\n<li><strong>Toby Kammunkun<\/strong> (<span aria-label=\"Kapiolani\">Kapi&#699;olani<\/span>)-Chicken Tom Yum Couscous <\/li>\n<li><strong>LaTonya Emedo<\/strong> (<span aria-label=\"Kapiolani\">Kapi&#699;olani<\/span>)-Pacific Rim Meatballs <\/li>\n<li><strong>Lee Ann Young<\/strong> (<span aria-label=\"Kapiolani\">Kapi&#699;olani<\/span>)-Thai Curry (Kabocha Puree) Soba <\/li>\n<li><strong>Jeremy Stevens<\/strong> (<span aria-label=\"Kapiolani\">Kapi&#699;olani<\/span>)-Shredded Chicken Burrito <\/li>\n<li><strong>Brittany Soga<\/strong> (<span aria-label=\"Kapiolani\">Kapi&#699;olani<\/span>)-Chicken Hekka Long Rice Noodle <\/li>\n<li><strong>Kainoa Reloza<\/strong> (<span aria-label=\"Kapiolani\">Kapi&#699;olani<\/span>)-Sinigang Rice Noodle Soup <\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>&ldquo;Partnering up with these large companies gives students this opportunity to boost up their resume or say hey look at this I made this dish that millions of people can buy,&rdquo; said <span aria-label=\"Kapiolani\">Kapi&#699;olani<\/span> <abbr>CC<\/abbr> Culinary Arts Instructor and Culinary Innovation Center Director <strong>Lauren Tamamoto<\/strong>. <\/p>\n<p>The contestants\u2019 dishes had to contain at least two locally grown, caught or raised ingredients and have no more than 700 calories. The entr&#233;e also had to be able to withstand four hours under a heat lamp, had to include at least three components, such as protein, vegetables, grains or pasta, and could not contain rice. <\/p>\n<p>&ldquo;\u201cWe like that demographic with new ideas, they think out of the box, so things that we haven\u2019t thought of and the culinary students have the skill to put it together,&rdquo; said Debbie Lee Soon, 7-Eleven <span aria-label=\"Hawaii\">Hawai&#699;i<\/span> senior category manager of fresh food. <\/p>\n<p>Kainoa Reloza&#8217;s Sinigang Rice Noodle Soup took first place honors and a $1,000 prize, with Brittany Soga\u2019s Chicken Hekka Long Rice Noodle a close second. Ritchie Wong&#8217;s Mapo Tofu Udon was named the People&#8217;s Choice winner, taking home $250. <\/p>\n<p>Reloza&#8217;s dish incorporated local <span aria-label=\"Hawaii\">Kaua&#699;i<\/span> farm raised shrimp, locally grown sweet onion, bok choy, okra, long beans, roma tomatoes and rice noodle in a tamarind broth. &ldquo;I just cook basic food you know, I didn\u2019t think something as simple as what I made would actually be sold. It\u2019s a little unreal.&rdquo;, said Reloza.<\/p>\n<p>Soga&#8217;s inspiration for her dish came from her childhood. &ldquo;It\u02bbs like a comfort style food for me and it reminds me of my Grandma.
