The initiative develops and provides no-cost or low-cost online learning materials throughout the <abbr>东精影业<\/abbr> system.<\/p>\n<p>&ldquo;The fact that I don\u2019t have to pay for an actual textbook, which is like another $100 per class I have to take, is a whole world of difference,&rdquo; said Leeward Community College student <strong>Jacob Flores<\/strong>, who works full-time as a grocery clerk at Safeway.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/oer.hawaii.edu\/leeward-cc-hits-milestone-with-40-txt0-courses\/\">Leeward <abbr title=\"Community College\">CC<\/abbr> is leading the way with 40 percent of the campus\u2019 spring 2019 classes sporting the &ldquo;<abbr>TXT0<\/abbr>&rdquo; designation<\/a>, meaning zero out-of-pocket costs for textbooks and supplemental course materials. The campus has saved students $3.4 million since 2015 through <abbr>OER<\/abbr>.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_107954\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-107954\" style=\"width: 250px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/12\/system-oer-infographic.jpg\" alt=\"Infographic on textbook affordability\" width=\"250\" height=\"343\" class=\"size-full wp-image-107954\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/12\/system-oer-infographic.jpg 250w, https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/12\/system-oer-infographic-219x300.jpg 219w, https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/12\/system-oer-infographic-95x130.jpg 95w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 250px) 100vw, 250px\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-107954\" class=\"wp-caption-text\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.easel.ly\/create?id=https:\/\/s3.amazonaws.com\/easel.ly\/all_easels\/3724216\/TXT0-Fall-2019&#038;key=pri\">Full-sized version<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/sites.google.com\/a\/hawaii.edu\/oer\/zero-textbook-cost-adopters\/txt0-infographic-accessible\">accessible version<\/a>.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Assistant Professor <strong>Kelsie Aguilera<\/strong> actually collaborated with anthropologists around the world on the free online textbook her Anthropology 151 class used in fall 2019.<\/p>\n<p>&ldquo;It makes all the difference in the world,&rdquo; said Aguilera. &ldquo;I don\u2019t have to assign an expensive textbook to my students. I have autonomy toward what I give my students in terms of educational materials and I think it\u2019s really democratized the knowledge production process.&rdquo;<\/p>\n<p><strong>Ghiana Salud<\/strong>, a culinary arts student in Aguilera\u2019s Anthropology 151 class, says she appreciates the textbook\u2019s incorporation of videos, audio and direct references. &ldquo;I definitely like it,&rdquo; Salud said. &ldquo;One, it saves a lot of money, but it offers a different learning ability than just reading.&rdquo;<\/p>\n<p><abbr>OER<\/abbr> has flourished at Leeward <abbr>CC<\/abbr> with the support and leadership of Head Librarian <strong>Wayde Oshiro<\/strong> and Educational Media Center Coordinator <strong>Leanne Riseley<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>&ldquo;I think by localizing and customizing the teaching materials we just help to make the learning experience more engaging for our students,&rdquo; Oshiro said.<\/p>\n<p>Riseley added, &ldquo;The main thing that we see and we hear is that we are saving students money. So students are super grateful that they are able to use the money that they would have used for textbooks on necessities like rent and food.&rdquo;<\/p>\n<p>Besides continuing to increase cost savings to students, another goal of the <abbr>OER<\/abbr> initiative is to have a single website with all <abbr>TXT0<\/abbr> courses from all 10 <abbr>东精影业<\/abbr> campuses listed. The initiative also supports faculty in developing <abbr>OER<\/abbr> materials and improving teaching and learning in the process.
