He developed Hansen\u2019s disease, also known as leprosy, in his youth and was sent to Kalaupapa in 1879 at the age of 20. He spent the next 53 years there and left an indelible mark on Kalaupapa\u2019s history that has only begun to be acknowledged in recent years.<\/p>\n<p>Hutchison worked closely with, and outlived, most of the major figures in Kalaupapa\u2019s early history including Father Damien, Mother Marianne, Rudolph Meyer, Queen <span aria-label=\"Kapiolani,\">Kapi&#699;olani,<\/span> Queen <span aria-label=\"Liliuokalani\">Lili&#699;uokalani<\/span> and Joseph Dutton. He wrote and re-copied hundreds of pages of his recollections of a lifetime at Kalaupapa.<\/p>\n<p>Law\u2019s talk &ldquo;Ambrose K. Hutchison: The Story that No One Else Could Tell&rdquo; is supported by Ka <span aria-label=\"Ohana\">&#699;Ohana<\/span> O Kalaupapa, the <span aria-label=\"Hawaii\">Hawai&#699;i<\/span> Council for the Humanities and the <abbr>IDEA<\/abbr> Center for the Voices of Humanity.<\/p>\n<p>This presentation is part of a series of events in conjunction with <a href=\"https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/2019\/10\/29\/kalaupapa-exhibit-at-windward-cc\/\"><em>A Source of Light, Constant and Never Fading<\/em> exhibit<\/a> about Kalaupapa in the Windward <abbr title=\"Community College\">CC<\/abbr> library. Events and the exhibit are free and open to the public.
