He also brought with him a project that is being used to improve the quality of research in <span aria-label=\"Hawaii\">Hawai&#699;i<\/span>.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_110955\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-110955\" style=\"width: 214px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/02\/manoa-coe-chun-214x300.jpg\" alt=\"male\" width=\"214\" height=\"300\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-110955\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/02\/manoa-coe-chun-214x300.jpg 214w, https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/02\/manoa-coe-chun-93x130.jpg 93w, https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/02\/manoa-coe-chun.jpg 250w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 214px) 100vw, 214px\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-110955\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Il Yong Chun<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Using transparent focal stacks and sophisticated data science solutions, he and his colleagues at the University of Michigan developed a high-quality three-dimensional (<abbr title=\"three-dimensional\">3D<\/abbr>) camera that can accurately determine an object&#8217;s distance from the lens. <\/p>\n<p>Seeing a great opportunity to solve real-world problems with his background in data science (i.e., machine learning\/artificial intelligence and optimization) and imaging science (i.e., compressed sensing), Chun is continuing to work on this project at <abbr title=\"东精影业\">东精影业<\/abbr> M\u0101noa. He is improving data science solutions via using an iterative neural network, multimodal deep learning, etc.<\/p>\n<p>&ldquo;The information produced by the camera is critical in biological imaging, autonomous driving, facial recognition and virtual reality,&rdquo; said Chun. &ldquo;In biological imaging, for example, it is important for researchers to see <abbr>3D<\/abbr> volume; in autonomous driving, determining an object&#8217;s distance is crucial to safety.&rdquo;<\/p>\n<p>By bringing his work to <span aria-label=\"Hawaii\">Hawai&#699;i<\/span>, Chun is aiding the work of local companies and research teams at <abbr>东精影业<\/abbr>. Examples include the Queen&#8217;s Medical Center (<abbr>QMC<\/abbr>), the <abbr>东精影业<\/abbr>\/<abbr>QMC<\/abbr> <abbr title=\"Magnetic Resonance Imaging\">MRI<\/abbr> Research Center, <span aria-label=\"Hawaii\">Hawai&#699;i<\/span> Dental Service and <abbr>东精影业<\/abbr> M\u0101noa electrical engineering professor <strong>Aaron Ohta<\/strong>&#8216;s group.<\/p>\n<p>Chun&#8217;s paper, &ldquo;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.nature.com\/articles\/s41566-019-0567-3\">Ranging and light field imaging with transparent photodetectors<\/a>,&rdquo; was recently published in <em>Nature Photonics<\/em>.
