The case study also has been published regionally on the <a href=\"https:\/\/pirca.org\/2020\/01\/18\/reality-check-collaborative-research-contributes-to-real-life-policy-decisions\/\">Pacific Islands Regional Climate Assessment website<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>The <abbr title=\"东精影业\">东精影业<\/abbr> Hilo study examines shoreline migration on <span aria-label=\"Hawaii\">Hawai&#699;i<\/span> Island and combines historic aerial photos, current drone imagery and topographic surveys to discover coastal changes around <span aria-label=\"Hawaii\">Hawai&#699;i<\/span> Island. The project is being used by county planners and policymakers to develop a more comprehensive and effective coastal development plan.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_111401\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-111401\" style=\"width: 214px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/02\/hilo-coastal-research-laursen-214x300.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"214\" height=\"300\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-111401\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/02\/hilo-coastal-research-laursen-214x300.jpg 214w, https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/02\/hilo-coastal-research-laursen-93x130.jpg 93w, https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/02\/hilo-coastal-research-laursen.jpg 250w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 214px) 100vw, 214px\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-111401\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Scott Laursen<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>The published case study, &ldquo;<a href=\"https:\/\/toolkit.climate.gov\/case-studies\/reality-check-collaborative-research-contributes-real-life-policy-decisions\">Reality Check: Collaborative Research Contributes to Real-Life Policy Decisions<\/a>,&rdquo; is co-authored by <strong>Scott Laursen<\/strong>, program specialist at the <a href=\"http:\/\/pi-casc.soest.hawaii.edu\/\"><abbr>东精影业<\/abbr> Pacific Islands Climate Adaptation Science Center<\/a>, and Bethany Morrison, a planner on land use with the County of <span aria-label=\"Hawaii\">Hawai&#699;i<\/span> who collaborated on the research.<\/p>\n<p>&ldquo;We do not have adequate knowledge of <span aria-label=\"Hawaii\">Hawai&#699;i<\/span> Island\u2019s shoreline to be able to assess and adapt to the vulnerabilities from sea level rise and related hazards,&rdquo; Morrison explained. &ldquo;The goals of this project will help us to address these challenges. More specifically, <span aria-label=\"Hawaii\">Hawai&#699;i<\/span> County will have a first phase of shoreline change rates and sea-level rise projections for three different types of shorelines.&rdquo;<\/p>\n<p>In May 2018, the research team presented their findings to the county planning department, which administers planning regulations for the entire island and provides technical advice to the mayor, planning commission and county council.
