There is a statewide stay-at-home order in effect and practicing social distancing remains crucial to stem the spread. But \u200b<strong>Alan Katz<\/strong>\u200b, an <a href=\"https:\/\/manoa.hawaii.edu\/publichealth\/specializations\/epidemiology\">epidemiology<\/a> professor at the <a href=\"https:\/\/manoa.hawaii.edu\/\">University of <span aria-label=\"Hawaii\">Hawai&#699;i<\/span> at M\u0101noa<\/a>, said \u200bbecause a majority of <span aria-label=\"Hawaiis\">Hawai&#699;i&#699;s<\/span> communities are rural, it could help lessen the chance of a major outbreak.<\/p>\n<p>&ldquo;We only have one urban center in Honolulu and the rest of the islands are rural including any spot on <span aria-label=\"Oahu\">O&#699;ahu<\/span> that\u2019s outside of Honolulu, that\u2019s considered rural. So that\u2019s good. People are less densely populated,&rdquo; Katz explained. The <abbr title=\"东精影业\">东精影业<\/abbr> M&#257;noa epidemiologist said it gives the state some leeway in minimizing the spread of the highly infectious virus. <\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_114763\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-114763\" style=\"width: 300px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/03\/manoa-public-health-rural-hawaii-300x169.jpg\" alt=\"rural Hawaii neighborhood\" width=\"300\" height=\"169\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-114763\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/03\/manoa-public-health-rural-hawaii-300x169.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/03\/manoa-public-health-rural-hawaii-130x73.jpg 130w, https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/03\/manoa-public-health-rural-hawaii-630x353.jpg 630w, https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/03\/manoa-public-health-rural-hawaii.jpg 676w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-114763\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">In <span aria-label=\"Hawaii,\">Hawai&#699;i,<\/span> any area outside of Honolulu\u2019s urban core is considered rural.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Because the incubation period for COVID-19 is up to 14 days, Katz said <span aria-label=\"Hawaii\">Hawai&#699;i<\/span> will inevitably see more cases during the statewide lockdown but is hopeful it won\u2019t be a steep increase. In order to avoid a major outbreak, he urges everyone to take health guidelines seriously.<\/p>\n<p>&ldquo;The most important thing you can do is maintain social distancing. Stay 6 feet away from each other. That\u2019s going to really dramatically mitigate person to person spread of this. If you\u2019re not essential, if you\u2019re supposed to be at home try to stay at home.
