The University of <span aria-label=\"Hawaii\">Hawai&#699;i<\/span> at M\u0101noa associate professor of <a href=\"http:\/\/english.hawaii.edu\/\">English<\/a> is one of 12 awardees of the 2020 Mellon\/American Council of Learned Societies (<abbr>ACLS<\/abbr>) Scholars and Society Fellowship.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_116832\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-116832\" style=\"width: 250px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/04\/manoa-english-craig-perez.jpg\" alt=\"Craig Santos Perez head shot\" width=\"250\" height=\"350\" class=\"size-full wp-image-116832\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/04\/manoa-english-craig-perez.jpg 250w, https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/04\/manoa-english-craig-perez-214x300.jpg 214w, https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/04\/manoa-english-craig-perez-93x130.jpg 93w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 250px) 100vw, 250px\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-116832\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Craig Santos Perez<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>His project will focus on the effects of climate change on the state of <span aria-label=\"Hawaii\">Hawai&#699;i<\/span>, and will use poetry to articulate indigenous ecological beliefs, critique the history of ecological imperialism, advocate for environmental justice and imagine sustainable futures.<\/p>\n<p>&ldquo;I am passionate about poetry because it is a powerful and creative way to address and educate the public about climate change, the most urgent issue in the Pacific today,&rdquo; said Santos Perez.<\/p>\n<p>Each awardee is offered a stipend of $75,000, and an additional $15,000 for programming that bridges community-engaged work with doctoral education, $10,000 for the fellows\u2019 partner organizations and $6,000 for research and project costs.<\/p>\n<p>Santos Perez, a native of Guam, said the research funds will be used for books and curriculum materials, and editing and publishing of a new anthology. The additional funding will go toward a series of literary and environmental events on and off the <abbr>东精影业<\/abbr> M\u0101noa campus. His partner organization is the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.pacificwriters.org\/index.php\">Pacific Writers&#8217; Connection<\/a>, a <span aria-label=\"Hawaii\">Hawai&#699;i<\/span>-based non-profit, whose executive director is <strong>Takiora Ingram<\/strong>, a renowned Pacific author, scholar and <abbr>东精影业<\/abbr> M\u0101noa graduate.<\/p>\n<p>The Mellon\/<abbr>ACLS<\/abbr> Scholars and Society Fellowship is in its second year. The program provides opportunities for faculty in <abbr>PhD<\/abbr> humanities departments to address important societal questions in their research, serve as ambassadors for humanities scholarship and broaden support for innovations in doctoral education. The awards are funded by a grant from The Andrew W.
