The University of Hawaiʻi<\/span> at M\u0101noa\u2019s 2020 Awards<\/a> recognizes the leadership and service of its finest faculty, staff and students committed to enhancing the university\u2019s mission of excellence.<\/p>\n

In a message to the 2020 honorees, 东精影业<\/abbr> President David Lassner<\/strong> said, “Words like ‘catastrophic’ and ‘devastating’ are used frequently when describing the pandemic and its impact. But words like ‘amazing,’ ‘committed,’ ‘resilient,’ ‘collaborative,’ ‘innovative’ and ‘compassionate’ are what I use frequently to describe what our faculty, staff and students have accomplished during this crisis.”<\/p>\n

“We all have been challenged in this semester like no other, and the future is far from clear. But with your stellar work advancing 东精影业<\/abbr> M\u0101noa every day, I know that we will make it through these trying times stronger and wiser,” he added. <\/p>\n

Board of Regents\u2019 Medal for Excellence in Teaching<\/h3>\n

The Regents\u2019 Medal for Excellence in Teaching is awarded by the Board of Regents as tribute to faculty members who exhibit an extraordinary level of subject mastery and scholarship, teaching effectiveness and creativity and personal values that benefit students.<\/p>\n

Roger Babcock<\/strong>, professor, College of Engineering<\/a>
\nBabcock brings his expertise as a licensed professional engineer to the role of educator through his eight-week review course.<\/p>\n

Charlotte Frambaugh-Kritzer<\/strong>, professor, College of Education<\/a>
\nFrambaugh-Kritzer presents a balance of theory, research and practice in engaging and innovative ways.<\/p>\n

Alexander Mawyer<\/strong>, associate professor, School of Pacific and Asian Studies<\/a>
\nMawyer is described as having a sweeping, intellectual grasp on biocultural diversity that melds science, history, anthropology and linguistics.<\/p>\n

Alison Nugent<\/strong>, associate professor, School of Ocean and Earth Science and Technology<\/a>
\nIn Nugent\u2019s classes, students speak of gaining “a sense of community and collaborative learning, instead of competition.”<\/p>\n

Kathleen Sands<\/strong>, professor, Department of American Studies<\/a>
\nA colleague observes that Sands\u2019 teaching: “furthers the potential for respectful public dialogue and a meaningful public life.”<\/p>\n

Grieg Steward,<\/strong> professor, School of Ocean and Earth Science and Technology
\nSteward\u2019s approach towards the presentation of material is a form of theatre that bridges the distance between himself and students.<\/p>\n

Regents\u2019 Medal for Excellence in Research<\/h3>\n

The Regents\u2019 Medal for Excellence in Research is awarded by the University of Hawaiʻi<\/span> Board of Regents in recognition of scholarly contributions that expand the boundaries of knowledge and enrich the lives of students and the community.<\/p>\n

Daniel Huber<\/strong>, assistant astronomer, Institute for Astronomy<\/a>
\nHuber combines data from NASA<\/abbr> space missions with observations using ground-based telescopes in Hawaiʻi<\/span>.<\/p>\n

Qing Li<\/strong>, professor, College of Tropical Agriculture and Human Resources <\/a>
\nLi\u2019s research addresses fundamental issues in agricultural chemistry and has greatly advanced understanding of the field.<\/p>\n

Mari Yoshihara<\/strong>, professor and chair, Department of American Studies
\nYoshihara examines the politics of cultural encounters between the United States and East Asia.<\/p>\n

The Frances Davis Award for Excellence in Undergraduate Teaching<\/h3>\n

The Frances Davis Award for Excellence in Undergraduate Teaching for a faculty and a graduate assistant recognizes dedication and demonstrated excellence as teachers of undergraduate students. It was established as a memorial to the late Frances Davis, who taught mathematics at Leeward Community College and 东精影业<\/abbr> M\u0101noa for 19 years.<\/p>\n

Jason Higa<\/strong>, assistant professor, John A. Burns School of Medicine<\/a>
\nHiga augments the lecture and magnifies prerequisite knowledge through strategies of analogy, physical engagement and incorporation of local and Hawaiian terminology.<\/p>\n

Frances Davis Award for Excellence in Undergraduate Teaching for Graduate Teaching Assistants<\/h3>\n

Sabrina Diemert<\/strong>, PhD<\/abbr> candidate, College of Engineering
\nDiemert\u2019s teaching approach involves the use of active learning techniques, a deep enthusiasm for core concepts and connections to real-life applications and research.<\/p>\n

Robert W. Clopton Award for Distinguished Service to the Community<\/h3>\n

The Robert W. Clopton Award for Distinguished Community Service recognizes a 东精影业<\/abbr> M\u0101noa faculty member for playing a socially significant role by applying intellectual leadership and academic expertise to the improvement of the community. The award was established as a memorial to longtime 东精影业<\/abbr> M\u0101noa College of Education Professor Robert Clopton and first awarded in 1977.<\/p>\n

Melody Kapilialoha MacKenzie<\/strong>, professor, William S. Richardson School of Law<\/a>
\nMacKenzie leaves a legacy to Hawaiʻi<\/span> as a creative force and expert in the distinct area of Native Hawaiian law by illuminating culture as a living embodiment of how Maoli (native Hawaiian) culture provides the very foundation for Hawaiʻi<\/span> law.<\/p>\n

Presidential Citation for Meritorious Teaching<\/h3>\n

The Presidential Citation for Meritorious Teaching recognizes 东精影业<\/abbr> M\u0101noa faculty members who have made significant contributions to teaching and student learning.<\/p>\n

Katie Drager<\/strong>, associate professor, College of Languages, Linguistics and Literature<\/a>
\nDrager\u2019s pedagogy is grounded in a constructivist method of guiding students towards command of their own learning and a research-based method.<\/p>\n

Anna Feuerstein<\/strong>, associate professor, College of Languages, Linguistics and Literature
\nFeuerstein provides students with a deep awareness of literary traditions while analyzing cultural productions—novels, films, paintings—within their social, historical and political contexts.<\/p>\n

Howard Shen<\/strong>, instructor, Department of Microbiology <\/a>
\nShen\u2019s students relish his spirited use of analogies, props, personal anecdotes and jokes.<\/p>\n

Karla Sierralta<\/strong>, assistant professor, School of Architecture<\/a>
\nSierralta\u2019s studio teaching frequently expands into community projects, providing her students with opportunities to contribute to their communities.<\/p>\n

Noenoe Silva<\/strong>, professor, Department of Political Science<\/a>
\nSilva offers courses in Hawaiian language, and contributes greatly to the university\u2019s mission as an indigenous-serving institution.<\/p>\n

Amber Wright<\/strong>, assistant professor, Department of Biology <\/a>
\nWright is committed to building quantitative literacy and fostering student engagement by creating relevance to real-world situations and to life in the Hawaiian Islands.<\/p>\n

Presidential Award for Outstanding Service<\/h3>\n

The Presidential Award for Outstanding Service honors a 东精影业<\/abbr> M\u0101noa staff member who demonstrates outstanding work performance, service and leadership.<\/p>\n

Angel Asuncion<\/strong>, janitor supervisor, Building Services<\/a>
\nA 30-year employee of the university, Asuncion conducts regular inspections and team trainings, representing building services and leading by example.<\/p>\n

James Potemra<\/strong>, specialist, Hawaiʻi<\/span> Institute of Geophysics and Planetology <\/a>
\nPotemra has been instrumental in developing programs and addressing key challenges in physical oceanography data application at national and international levels.<\/p>\n

Loree Shiroma<\/strong>, janitor, Buildings and Grounds Management<\/a>
\nShiroma\u2019s high cleaning standards are described like \u201cpristine hospital conditions,\u201d and she anticipates problems and initiates remedies before users notice.<\/p>\n

William “Bill” Unruh<\/strong>, physical plant manager, Institute for Astronomy
\nUnruh\u2019s meticulous attention to facility details support IfA<\/abbr>\u2019s expertise, professionalism, innovation and overall success in service to the campus and the state.<\/p>\n

Dr. Amefil “Amy” Agbayani Faculty Diversity Enhancement Award<\/h3>\n

The Dr. Amefil “Amy” Agbayani Faculty Diversity Enhancement Award from the 东精影业<\/abbr> M\u0101noa Commission on Inclusion and Diversity recognizes a faculty member who has demonstrated an ongoing commitment to enhancing diversity. The award was established to recognize Agbayani\u2019s lifetime commitment to diversity and social justice in Hawaiʻi<\/span>. For more than 40 years, she served as the founder and director of the Office of Student Equity, Excellence and Diversity.<\/p>\n

Deborah Zuercher<\/strong>, professor, College of Education
\nZuercher has established effective place-based pedagogies that honor local traditions and has made significant achievements in recruiting and graduating diverse groups of students.<\/p>\n

Peter V. Garrod Distinguished Graduate Mentoring Award<\/h3>\n

Established by the 东精影业<\/abbr> M\u0101noa Graduate Division in 2005, the Peter V. Garrod Distinguished Graduate Mentoring Award allows graduate students to nominate faculty for excellent mentoring, one of the foundations of outstanding graduate education.<\/p>\n

Jairus Victor Grove<\/strong>, director, Hawaiʻi<\/span> Research Center for Futures Studies<\/a> and graduate chair, Department of Political Science
\nGrove currently serves on 24 dissertation committees, and is the university representative for dissertations in educational foundations, philosophy and sociology.<\/p>\n

Faculty Award for Excellence in Mentoring Undergraduate Research & Creative Work<\/h3>\n

The Faculty Award for Excellence in Mentoring Undergraduate Research and Creative Work was created in 2020 by the Undergraduate Research Opportunities Program in the Office of the Vice Chancellor for Research at 东精影业<\/abbr> M\u0101noa. The award recognizes up to two tenured\/tenure-track faculty mentors each academic year (one from a STEM<\/abbr> discipline, and one from a non-STEM<\/abbr> discipline) who have shown dedicated and sustained excellence in faculty mentoring of undergraduate students in their research and creative work endeavors.<\/p>\n

Brittany Biggs<\/strong>, assistant professor, Academy for Creative Media<\/a>
\nBiggs creates hands-on, practical mentorship projects that help students excel in their academic studies and prepare them for future careers.<\/p>\n

Pratibha Nerurkar<\/strong>, associate professor, Department of Molecular Biosciences and Bioengineering<\/a>
\nNerurkar regards undergraduate research and mentoring as a “high impact practice in higher education” and considers it as one of the most rewarding activities of her career.<\/p>\n

Outstanding Academic Advisor and Academic Unit of the Year Award<\/h3>\n

The Council of Academic Advisors recognizes an individual or unit who, over the past two years, has demonstrated excellence and\/or innovation in advising, and\/or has made a significant contribution to the advising community.<\/p>\n

Megumi Makino-Kanehiro<\/strong>, director, M\u0101noa Advising Center<\/a>
\nMakino-Kanehiro\u2019s passion is equity and diversity, which is evident in both her advising philosophy and in her work and service as an advisor.<\/p>\n

The M\u0101noa Transfer Coordination Center<\/a> <\/strong>
\nEstablished in 2014, the center implements and manages the Kaʻieʻie<\/span> Degree Pathway Program, a dual-admission, dual-enrollment partnership between the 东精影业<\/abbr> Community Colleges and 东精影业<\/abbr> M\u0101noa to assist with transfer of students between the campuses.<\/p>\n

Student Excellence in Research Award<\/h3>\n

The Student Excellence in Research Award is awarded by the 东精影业<\/abbr> M\u0101noa Office of the Vice Chancellor for Research in recognition of outstanding scholarly research endeavors by students while they pursue a degree at the doctoral, master\u2019s or bachelor\u2019s level.<\/p>\n

Zhoujian (ZJ) Zhan<\/strong>, PhD<\/abbr> candidate, Institute for Astronomy
\nZhang is using his discoveries to characterize their atmospheres and demographics in order to understand the wide diversity of exoplanetary systems.<\/p>\n

Joy Agner<\/strong>, PhD<\/abbr> candidate, Department of Psychology<\/a>
\nAgner\u2019s research focuses on improving health systems and policy for marginalized populations.<\/p>\n

Marley Aiu<\/strong>, bachelor\u2019s candidate, English<\/a> and Dance<\/a>
\nAiu uses creative research (choreography, creative writing, film and photography) to both educate and empower local and global communities.<\/p>\n

Student Employee of the Year Award<\/h3>\n

The Student Employee of the Year Program was created in 1986 by the M\u0101noa Career Center to recognize and highlight the achievements and contributions of student employees on the 东精影业<\/abbr> M\u0101noa campus.<\/p>\n

Lindsey Bull<\/strong>, student assistant, Joint Institute for Marine and Atmospheric Research<\/a>
\nBull worked with the marine turtle biology and assessment program for more than three years and conducted research on the effects of sea turtle nest incubation temperature upon hatching success.<\/p>\n
