Unfortunately for steak lovers, Wagyu are also known for having poor reproductive rates. University of <span aria-label=\"Hawaii\">Hawai&#699;i<\/span> at M\u0101noa\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/cms.ctahr.hawaii.edu\/\">College of Tropical Agriculture and Human Resources<\/a> Extension Agent <strong>Kyle Caires<\/strong> is on a mission to change that.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/05\/manoa-ctahr-wagyu-236x300.jpg\" alt=\"wagyu beef\" width=\"236\" height=\"300\" class=\"alignright size-medium wp-image-118584\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/05\/manoa-ctahr-wagyu-236x300.jpg 236w, https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/05\/manoa-ctahr-wagyu-102x130.jpg 102w, https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/05\/manoa-ctahr-wagyu.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 236px) 100vw, 236px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Caires, who works in the <a href=\"https:\/\/cms.ctahr.hawaii.edu\/hnfas\/Academics\/Animal-Sciences-MS\">Department of Human Nutrition, Food and Animal Sciences<\/a>, recently took the next step in his long-term quest to improve the reproductive technologies of cattle with his paper, &ldquo;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.mdpi.com\/2306-7381\/7\/2\/58\">The outcome and economic viability of production using <abbr>IVF<\/abbr> and <abbr>SOV<\/abbr> techniques in the Wagyu breed of cattle<\/a>.&rdquo;<\/p>\n<p>Along with collaborators from Brazil and Washington State, Caires is combining econometrics (the application of statistical methods to economic data) with scientific outcomes. Our team conducts applied research to help take the guesswork out of the process for beef producers. This will lead to improvements in cattle fertility and lower costs for genetic improvement.
