Ramos and Joseph <span aria-label=\"Keaweaimoku\">Keawe&#699;aimoku<\/span> Kaholokula will lead the <abbr>CREATE<\/abbr> program.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>The <a href=\"http:\/\/www.uhcancercenter.org\">University of <span aria-label=\"Hawaii\">Hawai&#699;i<\/span> Cancer Center <\/a>has been awarded a five-year $1.36-million grant for a new program to address and enhance workforce training that will meet biomedical, behavioral and clinical research needs to lower cancer incidence and mortality in the Pacific. The center will establish the National Institutes of Health Cancer Research Education, Advancement, Training and Empowerment (<abbr>CREATE<\/abbr>) program. <\/p>\n<p><abbr>CREATE<\/abbr> will provide mentorship opportunities for undergraduate and graduate students living in <span aria-label=\"Hawaii\">Hawai&#699;i<\/span> and the Pacific through hands-on cancer research experience, helping to increase the number of students who pursue cancer research careers in fields such as biology, epidemiology, prevention, control and clinical sciences.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_124116\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-124116\" style=\"width: 300px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/08\/manoa-cancercenter-building-300x169.jpg\" alt=\"building\" width=\"300\" height=\"169\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-124116\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/08\/manoa-cancercenter-building-300x169.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/08\/manoa-cancercenter-building-130x73.jpg 130w, https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/08\/manoa-cancercenter-building.jpg 676w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-124116\" class=\"wp-caption-text\"><abbr>东精影业<\/abbr> Cancer Center<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Utilizing the knowledge and talents of 40 <abbr title=\"东精影业\">东精影业<\/abbr> Cancer Center faculty members, <abbr>CREATE<\/abbr> will mentor students and provide them with an intensive 10-week hands-on research experience. Students will learn how to address health disparities and collaborate on multidisciplinary projects through a curriculum of seminars, workshops and career development sessions. <\/p>\n<p>The National Institutes of Health program will be led by <abbr>东精影业<\/abbr> Cancer Center\u2019s <strong>Gertraud Maskarinec<\/strong>, associate director for research education and <strong>Joe W. Ramos<\/strong>, deputy director, and <strong>Joseph <span aria-label=\"Keaweaimoku\">Keawe&#699;aimoku<\/span> Kaholokula<\/strong>, chair of the Department of Native Hawaiian Health at the <a href=\"http:\/\/jabsom.hawaii.edu\">John A. Burns School of Medicine<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Research training within <span aria-label=\"Hawaii\">Hawai&#699;i<\/span>\u2019s multiethnic environment and the <abbr>东精影业<\/abbr> Cancer Center&#8217;s unique cancer biology labs will strengthen the abilities of program participants to address causes, diagnosis, prevention and treatment of cancer.<\/p>\n<h2>Program details<\/h2>\n<p>The <abbr>CREATE<\/abbr> annual program anticipates to begin its recruitment efforts in 2021, with plans to mentor 16 undergraduate students during the summer, two graduate students during the fall semester and two graduate students during the spring. These participants must be residents of <span aria-label=\"Hawaii\">Hawai&#699;i<\/span> and Guam, and include students from <abbr>东精影业<\/abbr>, other universities within the state, colleges on the continental <abbr title=\"United States\">U.S.<\/abbr> and the University of Guam.
