  {"id":125569,"date":"2020-08-20T15:55:36","date_gmt":"2020-08-21T01:55:36","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/?p=125569"},"modified":"2020-08-24T09:58:26","modified_gmt":"2020-08-24T19:58:26","slug":"ai-innovation-covid19-diagnosis","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/2020\/08\/20\/ai-innovation-covid19-diagnosis\/","title":{"rendered":"<abbr title=\"Artificial intelligence\">AI<\/abbr> innovation may improve COVID-19 diagnosis"},"content":{"rendered":"<span class=\"span-reading-time rt-reading-time\" style=\"display: block;\"><span class=\"rt-label rt-prefix\">Reading time: <\/span> <span class=\"rt-time\"> 2<\/span> <span class=\"rt-label rt-postfix\">minutes<\/span><\/span><p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/06\/manoa-jabsom-covid19-virus.jpg\" alt=\"microscopic image of coronavirus\" width=\"676\" height=\"381\" class=\"alignleft size-full wp-image-120585\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/06\/manoa-jabsom-covid19-virus.jpg 676w, https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/06\/manoa-jabsom-covid19-virus-300x169.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/06\/manoa-jabsom-covid19-virus-130x73.jpg 130w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 676px) 100vw, 676px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>A new artificial intelligence (<abbr title=\"Artificial intelligence\">AI<\/abbr>) innovation can test individuals for COVID-19 with greater accuracy and safety, and a <a href=\"https:\/\/manoa.hawaii.edu\/\">University of <span aria-label=\"Hawaii\">Hawai&#699;i<\/span> at M\u0101noa<\/a> team is working with medical professionals to put it into action.<\/p>\n<p>Studies performed in China show only about 50 to 80 percent of those with COVID-19 will be identified by the widely-used <abbr title=\"reverse transcription\">RT<\/abbr>&#8211;<abbr title=\"polymerase chain reaction\">PCR<\/abbr> test (swab test), while a chest computational tomography (<abbr title=\"computational tomography\">CT<\/abbr>) scan provides the most accurate diagnosis. However, since <abbr>CT<\/abbr> scans come with the risk of radiation exposure, using reduced doses is recommended. The problem is reduced doses, particularly less than 30 percent of the usual dose, cause strong streak artifacts on <abbr>CT<\/abbr> images, obscuring the detection of lung abnormalities such as COVID-19 and cancer.<\/p>\n<p><abbr title=\"东精影业\">东精影业<\/abbr> M\u0101noa electrical engineering Assistant Professor <a href=\"https:\/\/ee.hawaii.edu\/faculty\/detail.php?usr=105\"><strong>Il Yong Chun<\/strong><\/a> and his team developed new <abbr>AI<\/abbr> systems that can resolve this issue by reconstructing high-quality images at lower dosages, providing a more accurate diagnosis with greater safety.<\/p>\n<h2>Published research<\/h2>\n<p>Chun\u2019s innovation, <a href=\"http:\/\/doi.org\/10.1109\/TPAMI.2020.3012955\">the state-of-the-art iterative neural network, called Momentum-Net<\/a>, was recently published in <em><abbr title=\"Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers\">IEEE<\/abbr> Transactions on Pattern Analysis and Machine Intelligence<\/em>, the most prestigious journal in <abbr>AI<\/abbr> and computer vision. Momentum-Net can rapidly solve a wide range of problems in imaging, image processing and computer vision. It can reconstruct previously unseen images with high quality even when trained from limited samples.<\/p>\n<h2>Innovation implementation<\/h2>\n<p>Chun is working with medical physicists and radiologists at The Queen\u2019s Medical Center to determine how to implement it in the hospital.<\/p>\n<p>&ldquo;In the context of emergency disease control or insufficient <abbr>RT<\/abbr>&#8211;<abbr>PCR<\/abbr> test kits, <abbr>CT<\/abbr> can provide a fast, convenient and effective method to early detect and\/or isolate suspicious cases,&rdquo; Chun said. &ldquo;The number of confirmed or probable cases in <span aria-label=\"Hawaii\">Hawai&#699;i<\/span> has been dramatically increasing since mid-July, so community medical centers might consider the use of <abbr>CT<\/abbr> for patients with moderate to severe COVID-19 pneumonia.&rdquo;<\/p>\n<h2>Future projects<\/h2>\n<p>Chun\u2019s team will now look to tailor Momentum-Net for diverse low-level processing and high-level vision applications in medical imaging and computational photography. Along with its current COVID-19 project, the team will also examine <a href=\"https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/2020\/08\/04\/project-preps-traffic-self-driving-cars\/\">autonomous driving<\/a> using <a href=\"https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/2020\/02\/11\/3d-camera-improves-research\/\"><abbr title=\"3 dimensional\">3D<\/abbr> cameras<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Chun is actively recruiting talented UH and international students who wish to pursue a speciality in imaging and data science while obtaining a doctoral degree in electrical engineering.
