  {"id":127720,"date":"2020-09-25T15:37:31","date_gmt":"2020-09-26T01:37:31","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/?p=127720"},"modified":"2021-03-31T12:55:01","modified_gmt":"2021-03-31T22:55:01","slug":"native-hawaiian-program-receives-boost","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/2020\/09\/25\/native-hawaiian-program-receives-boost\/","title":{"rendered":"At-risk Native Hawaiian youth program receives $2.9M boost"},"content":{"rendered":"<span class=\"span-reading-time rt-reading-time\" style=\"display: block;\"><span class=\"rt-label rt-prefix\">Reading time: <\/span> <span class=\"rt-time\"> 2<\/span> <span class=\"rt-label rt-postfix\">minutes<\/span><\/span><p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/09\/manoa-coe-dunn.jpg\" alt=\"male\" width=\"250\" height=\"349\" class=\"alignright size-full wp-image-127728\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/09\/manoa-coe-dunn.jpg 250w, https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/09\/manoa-coe-dunn-215x300.jpg 215w, https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/09\/manoa-coe-dunn-93x130.jpg 93w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 250px) 100vw, 250px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>A $2.9 million grant to assist <span aria-label=\"Hawaii\">Hawai&#699;i<\/span> Island underserved secondary students was awarded to the University of <span aria-label=\"Hawaii\">Hawai&#699;i<\/span>. <strong>Hugh Dunn<\/strong>, program director of the Pacific Literacy Consortium (<abbr title=\"Pacific Literacy Consortium\">PLC<\/abbr>) in <abbr title=\"东精影业\">东精影业<\/abbr> M\u0101noa <a href=\"http:\/\/coe.hawaii.edu\/\">College of Education<\/a>\u2019s Curriculum Research &#38; Development Group (<abbr title=\"Curriculum Research &#038; Development Group\">CRDG<\/abbr>), received a <a href=\"https:\/\/www2.ed.gov\/programs\/nathawaiian\/index.html\">Native Hawaiian Education Program <\/a>(<abbr title=\"Native Hawaiian Education Program\">NHEP<\/abbr>) grant to support Project <span aria-label=\"Aha\">&#699;Aha<\/span> Lamak\u016b <span aria-label=\"Oia\u2018i\u2018o\">&#699;Oia\u2018i\u2018o<\/span> (<abbr title=\"\u02bbAha Lamak\u016b \u02bbOia\u2018i\u2018o\">ALO<\/abbr>). <\/p>\n<p>Project <abbr>ALO<\/abbr> is a culturally responsive leadership development, mentoring and transition support system for at-risk Native Hawaiian youth. Building on the positive results of previous <abbr>PLC<\/abbr> and <span aria-label=\"Hawaii\">Hawai&#699;i<\/span> Department of Education joint efforts funded by <abbr>NHEP<\/abbr> and other funding sources, Project <abbr>ALO<\/abbr> is designed to ensure the timely completion of courses, promotion to next grade levels, graduation from high school, and successful transition into post-high school college or employment training.<\/p>\n<p><abbr>ALO<\/abbr> will target strategic support to underserved secondary students in four schools in <span aria-label=\"Hawaii\">Hawai&#699;i<\/span> Island\u2019s <span aria-label=\"Kau\">Ka&#699;\u016b<\/span>&#8211;<span aria-label=\"Keaau\">Kea&#699;au<\/span>-P\u0101hoa Complex Area (<abbr>KKP<\/abbr>), employing the concept of ma ka hana ka <span aria-label=\"ike\">&#699;ike<\/span> (knowledge is gained by doing) and integrating proven culturally-responsive approaches.
