The <a href=\"http:\/\/www.caffest.com\/index.html\">Cultural Animation Film Festival<\/a> (<abbr title=\"Cultural Animation Film Festival\">CAFF<\/abbr>), hosted by the Honolulu Museum of Art Doris Duke Theatre, highlighted unique animated films based on diverse cultures.<\/p>\n<p><em>Flight<\/em> by senior <strong>Nalu McFadden-Rios<\/strong> and <em>The Girl and the Kappa Monster<\/em> by spring 2020 graduate <strong>Gavin Arucan<\/strong> were featured in a showcase of animated films for kids. Flight is about a young and lonely seagull who seeks friendship, but due to her inability to fly and concerns of leaving the safety of her buoy, she finds it difficult to meet others. However, after an encounter with a beluga whale, the seagull realizes that leaving her comfort zone leads to new friends.<\/p>\n<p><em>The Girl and the Kappa Monster<\/em> is about Hiriko, a lonely, young Japanese woman, who develops a close friendship with an injured kappa monster, but it takes a stronger grip on her life than she would like.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/09\/manoa-acm-detwiler-pua-ka-uahi-300x169.jpg\" alt=\"screenshot of animation of volcano and sky\" width=\"300\" height=\"169\" class=\"alignright size-medium wp-image-127950\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/09\/manoa-acm-detwiler-pua-ka-uahi-300x169.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/09\/manoa-acm-detwiler-pua-ka-uahi-130x73.jpg 130w, https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/09\/manoa-acm-detwiler-pua-ka-uahi.jpg 676w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/p>\n<p><em>Pua ka uahi<\/em> by <strong>Kalilinoe Detwiler<\/strong>, a current <abbr title=\"Master of Arts\">MA<\/abbr> student in English and spring 2020 graduate in English and creative media, was spotlighted in <abbr>CAFF<\/abbr>\u2019s opening night celebration, along with Arucan\u2019s <em>The Girl and the Kappa Monster<\/em>. Detwiler\u2019s film is about Pele, a young and hot-tempered volcano goddess, who has been challenged by <span aria-label=\"Kamapuaa\">Kamapua&#699;a<\/span>, a shapeshifting trickster in a race around <span aria-label=\"Hawaii\">Hawai&#699;i<\/span> Island.<\/p>\n<p>&ldquo;<abbr>CAFF<\/abbr> is a kaleidoscopic event that brings artists from around the world to <span aria-label=\"Hawaii\">Hawai&#699;i<\/span> and opens communication between these cultures,&rdquo; Detwiler said. &ldquo;It was a valuable opportunity for me and my fellow animators from <span aria-label=\"Hawaii\">Hawai&#699;i<\/span> to learn about stories outside of the Pacific as well as for filmmakers from all over, including Australia, Europe, and Asia to see <span aria-label=\"Hawaii\">Hawai&#699;i<\/span>-based films.&rdquo;<\/p>\n<h2>Inspiring a new generation through culture<\/h2>\n<p>Detwiler was one of four panelists from <span aria-label=\"Hawaii\">Hawai&#699;i<\/span>, Australia and the Netherlands in a talk story session at the end of the opening night celebration. &ldquo;Guided by Hope: Cultural Inspiration for a New Generation&rdquo; was moderated by <strong>Cheng-Cheng Li<\/strong>, a <abbr>东精影业<\/abbr> M\u0101noa <abbr title=\"Doctor of Philosphy\">PhD<\/abbr> student in political science and graduate degree fellow at the East-West Center.<\/p>\n<p>The panelists discussed issues related to their own cultures.
