Students in the University of Hawaiʻi<\/span> at M\u0101noa<\/a>\u2019s College of Education (COE<\/abbr>) Institute for Teacher Education<\/a> and Department of Kinesiology and Rehabilitation Science<\/a> (KRS<\/abbr>) recently teamed up with students from 东精影业<\/abbr> M\u0101noa Nursing<\/a> in a simulated interprofessional educational (IPE<\/abbr>) experience to collaborate on a student-athlete\u2019s “return to learn” plan.<\/p>\n

The goal of this Sports Concussion Injury Management IPE<\/abbr> experience was to provide students with an opportunity to work together, learn each other\u2019s roles and responsibilities, and collaborate to achieve a common goal. The activity focused on students from each program working together on a concussion case study in order to gain experience with the core principles of IPE<\/abbr> using Response to Intervention. <\/p>\n

“Communication and collaboration amongst different professions is essential for our students, patients and community member\u2019s health, well-being and education needs,” according to the Hawaiʻi<\/span> IPE<\/abbr> planning team, which includes COE<\/abbr> faculty members Stephanie Furuta<\/strong>, Kaori Tamura<\/strong>, Bret Freemyer<\/strong>, Troy Furutani<\/strong>, Yukiya Oba<\/strong>, as well as 东精影业<\/abbr> M\u0101noa Nursing\u2019s Lorrie Wong<\/strong>, Sarah Pirani<\/strong>, Kal Peterman<\/strong> and Kimm Teruya<\/strong>. <\/p>\n

Athletic training, nursing and Master of Education in Teaching<\/a> (MEdT<\/abbr>) students worked together to devise a plan for a student-athlete with a head concussion. The plan entailed considerations of returning to the school environment, as well as athletics with a focus on the medical condition. The students applied their collaborative skills and their discipline-specific knowledge in a simulated telehealth setting with a live actor from the 东精影业<\/abbr> M\u0101noa Department of Theatre and Dance<\/a> via the 东精影业<\/abbr> HealthCAST program housed within the 东精影业<\/abbr> Translational Health Science Simulation Center<\/a> (THSSC<\/abbr>). <\/p>\n

“IPE<\/abbr> is a hot topic within the healthcare profession, and Lorrie Wong really is the pioneer within the state of Hawaiʻi<\/span> for not only IPE<\/abbr>, but also simulation education which provides real-life clinical experience,” said Tamura, director of the KRS<\/abbr> Professional Athletic Training Program. “We are so grateful that she kindly responded to our request to collaborate and led the team to develop our first IPE<\/abbr> event.”<\/p>\n

Faculty members from MEdT<\/abbr>, KRS<\/abbr> and Nursing planned the collaborative simulation activity with the following core IPE<\/abbr> goals in mind: the values and ethics for IPE<\/abbr>, roles and responsibilities of each profession, interprofessional communication and teamwork. <\/p>\n

“Interprofessional team collaboration is essential to providing safe quality care for the people of Hawaiʻi<\/span>,” said Wong, an associate professor and director of THSSC<\/abbr>. “This IPE<\/abbr> simulation session expanded interprofessional education to include professions outside of the traditional groups of health professionals. This opens a new arena for our 东精影业<\/abbr> students to learn to work in teams with the goal to improve health outcomes for our patients.”<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
