The activity focused on students from each program working together on a concussion case study in order to gain experience with the core principles of <abbr>IPE<\/abbr> using Response to Intervention. <\/p>\n<p>&ldquo;Communication and collaboration amongst different professions is essential for our students, patients and community member\u2019s health, well-being and education needs,&rdquo; according to the <span aria-label=\"Hawaii\">Hawai&#699;i<\/span> <abbr>IPE<\/abbr> planning team, which includes <abbr>COE<\/abbr> faculty members <strong>Stephanie Furuta<\/strong>, <strong>Kaori Tamura<\/strong>, <strong>Bret Freemyer<\/strong>, <strong>Troy Furutani<\/strong>, <strong>Yukiya Oba<\/strong>, as well as <abbr>东精影业<\/abbr> M\u0101noa Nursing\u2019s <strong>Lorrie Wong<\/strong>, <strong>Sarah Pirani<\/strong>, <strong>Kal Peterman<\/strong> and <strong>Kimm Teruya<\/strong>. <\/p>\n<p>Athletic training, nursing and <a href=\"https:\/\/coe.hawaii.edu\/academics\/institute-teacher-education\/med-teaching\">Master of Education in Teaching<\/a> (<abbr title=\"Master of Education in Teaching\">MEdT<\/abbr>) students worked together to devise a plan for a student-athlete with a head concussion. The plan entailed considerations of returning to the school environment, as well as athletics with a focus on the medical condition. The students applied their collaborative skills and their discipline-specific knowledge in a simulated telehealth setting with a live actor from the <abbr>东精影业<\/abbr> M\u0101noa <a href=\"http:\/\/manoa.hawaii.edu\/liveonstage\/\">Department of Theatre and Dance<\/a> via the <abbr>东精影业<\/abbr> HealthCAST program housed within the <a href=\"https:\/\/nursing.hawaii.edu\/thssc\/\"><abbr>东精影业<\/abbr> Translational Health Science Simulation Center<\/a> (<abbr title=\"Translational Health Science Simulation Center\">THSSC<\/abbr>). <\/p>\n<p>&ldquo;<abbr>IPE<\/abbr> is a hot topic within the healthcare profession, and Lorrie Wong really is the pioneer within the state of <span aria-label=\"Hawaii\">Hawai&#699;i<\/span> for not only <abbr>IPE<\/abbr>, but also simulation education which provides real-life clinical experience,&rdquo; said Tamura, director of the <abbr>KRS<\/abbr> Professional Athletic Training Program. &ldquo;We are so grateful that she kindly responded to our request to collaborate and led the team to develop our first <abbr>IPE<\/abbr> event.&rdquo;<\/p>\n<p>Faculty members from <abbr>MEdT<\/abbr>, <abbr>KRS<\/abbr> and Nursing planned the collaborative simulation activity with the following core <abbr>IPE<\/abbr> goals in mind: the values and ethics for <abbr>IPE<\/abbr>, roles and responsibilities of each profession, interprofessional communication and teamwork. <\/p>\n<p>&ldquo;Interprofessional team collaboration is essential to providing safe quality care for the people of <span aria-label=\"Hawaii\">Hawai&#699;i<\/span>,&rdquo; said Wong, an associate professor and director of <abbr>THSSC<\/abbr>. &ldquo;This <abbr>IPE<\/abbr> simulation session expanded interprofessional education to include professions outside of the traditional groups of health professionals.
