Since mid-February, <abbr>PMA<\/abbr> volunteers have connected with 84 k\u016bpuna to provide assistance.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_138128\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-138128\" style=\"width: 214px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/03\/manoa-pre-med-kupuna-sign-214x300.jpeg\" alt=\"a senior woman holds up a kupuna sign\" width=\"214\" height=\"300\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-138128\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/03\/manoa-pre-med-kupuna-sign-214x300.jpeg 214w, https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/03\/manoa-pre-med-kupuna-sign-93x130.jpeg 93w, https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/03\/manoa-pre-med-kupuna-sign.jpeg 250w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 214px) 100vw, 214px\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-138128\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">(Photo credit: Our K\u016bpuna\/Kelsie Mercado-Uehara)<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>&ldquo;At first, we contacted Our K\u016bpuna to see if they were interested in receiving handmade cards from our members for the k\u016bpuna, but instead they shared the idea of these health check-ins and their need for volunteers,&rdquo; said <strong>Lauren Nakamine<\/strong>, <abbr>PMA<\/abbr>\u2019s director of community service and a third-year biology student.<\/p>\n<p>&ldquo;We were thrilled the pre-medical association students reached out to us, and we wanted to utilize them quickly due to the vaccine rollouts,&rdquo; said Our K\u016bpuna Program Director Vince Abramo. &ldquo;The students are amazing and have been essential in providing resources and being empathetic with k\u016bpuna.&rdquo;<\/p>\n<h2>Checking in, talking story<\/h2>\n<p>Nakamine and her fellow student volunteers dedicate a few hours each week to reach out to k\u016bpuna who are eligible to receive the COVID-19 vaccine and ensure they have the resources to get vaccinated. As part of the health check-ins, students ask questions and help assess their physical, mental and social well-being. Data collected by the volunteers, such as how many seniors are receiving the vaccine and barriers they have encountered registering for the vaccine or getting to the vaccination site, are also reported to the Hawai\u02bbi Department of Health<\/p>\n<p>&ldquo;Some may have trouble registering or have transportation issues and we do our best to provide contact information for different vaccination clinics as well as transportation services on their specific islands,&rdquo; said Nakamine. &ldquo;Besides the logistics of being a health check-in volunteer, we spend time with the k\u016bpuna and listen to their stories\/life lessons as many have been isolated since the beginning of the pandemic.&rdquo;<\/p>\n<h2>Uplifting, motivating<\/h2>\n<figure id=\"attachment_138131\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-138131\" style=\"width: 300px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/03\/manoa-pre-med-vaccine-300x165.jpeg\" alt=\"senior woman getting a vaccine shot\" width=\"300\" height=\"165\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-138131\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/03\/manoa-pre-med-vaccine-300x165.jpeg 300w, https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/03\/manoa-pre-med-vaccine-130x72.jpeg 130w, https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/03\/manoa-pre-med-vaccine.jpeg 675w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-138131\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">(Photo credit: Our K\u016bpuna)<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p><strong>Chase Kane<\/strong>, a first year chemistry student, said the experience has been uplifting and motivating. &ldquo;So many k\u016bpuna are extremely thankful for the services that Our K\u016bpuna provides and that we &lsquo;young people&rsquo; are checking in on them, even if it is only for 15&#8212;20 minutes. A lot of the time, they just want to talk to someone about their day. It\u2019s also interesting to hear strangers on the phone tell you about their pasts and life lessons; I will definitely remember some of their stories!&rdquo;<\/p>\n<p>&ldquo;Whether it&#8217;s scheduling an appointment or getting to the clinic site to receive the vaccination, it feels great to make an impact by providing the resources our at-risk populations and vulnerable k\u016bpuna can contact to get their vaccination,&rdquo; added <strong>Anna Fan<\/strong>, a third-year biology and psychology major.<\/p>\n<p>&ldquo;Many k\u016bpuna have shared that they are lonely due to the pandemic.
