  {"id":140088,"date":"2021-04-23T14:03:50","date_gmt":"2021-04-24T00:03:50","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/?p=140088"},"modified":"2021-04-23T14:07:18","modified_gmt":"2021-04-24T00:07:18","slug":"professor-to-lead-largest-society-of-health-and-physical-educators","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/2021\/04\/23\/professor-to-lead-largest-society-of-health-and-physical-educators\/","title":{"rendered":"Professor to lead Western District of nation\u2019s largest society of health and physical educators"},"content":{"rendered":"<span class=\"span-reading-time rt-reading-time\" style=\"display: block;\"><span class=\"rt-label rt-prefix\">Reading time: <\/span> <span class=\"rt-time\"> 2<\/span> <span class=\"rt-label rt-postfix\">minutes<\/span><\/span><p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/04\/dyan-rename-me.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"250\" height=\"350\" class=\"alignright size-full wp-image-140085\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/04\/dyan-rename-me.jpg 250w, https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/04\/dyan-rename-me-214x300.jpg 214w, https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/04\/dyan-rename-me-93x130.jpg 93w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 250px) 100vw, 250px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>An assistant professor of the University of <span aria-label=\"Hawaii\">Hawai&#699;i<\/span> at M\u0101noa College of Education <a href=\"https:\/\/coe.hawaii.edu\/krs\/\">Department of Kinesiology and Rehabilitation Science<\/a> (<abbr>KRS<\/abbr>), has been selected as president-elect of the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.shapeamerica.org\/about\/districts\/western\/default.aspx\">Western District for the Society of Health and Physical Educators<\/a> (<abbr>SHAPE<\/abbr>) America. <abbr>SHAPE<\/abbr> is the voice for more than 200,000 health and physical education professionals nationally, having served as the foundation for well-designed physical education programs across the country.<\/p>\n<p>A Health and Physical Education (<abbr>HPE<\/abbr>) Assistant Professor at <abbr>KRS<\/abbr>, <strong>Erin Centeio<\/strong> was also appointed to the <abbr title=\"United States\">U.S.<\/abbr> Department of Health and Human Services <a href=\"https:\/\/coe.hawaii.edu\/krs\/news\/coe-faculty-member-is-appointed-to-the-u-s-presidents-council-on-fitness-sports-and-nutrition-science-board\/\">President\u2019s Council on Sports, Fitness and Nutrition Science Board<\/a> in 2020.<\/p>\n<p>As part of her role on the board, Centeio will help provide professional development opportunities, share free resources from across the country, help states and teachers advocate for the importance of health and physical education (<abbr>PE<\/abbr>), and promote best practices and successes through social media.<\/p>\n<p>&ldquo;Erin is not only a vital member of the <abbr>HPE<\/abbr> Teacher Preparation faculty within <abbr>KRS<\/abbr>, but she is also a nationally respected leader in the field of Health and Physical Education,&rdquo; said <abbr>KRS<\/abbr> Chair <strong>Cris Stickley<\/strong>. &ldquo;I can think of no one better to represent the University of <span aria-label=\"Hawaii\">Hawai&#699;i<\/span> in serving in such an important role within her profession.&rdquo;<\/p>\n<p>Centeio shared, &ldquo;I am excited to join the leadership team of <abbr>SHAPE<\/abbr> America\u2019s Western District. It has always been important to me to give back to the profession that has given me so much. My passion centers around preparing pre-service teachers who are culturally relevant and have the desire to become quality health and physical education teachers so that they can have an impact on the lives of <abbr>PK<\/abbr>&#8211;12 students.&rdquo;<\/p>\n<p>With early plans to become a physical therapist, Centeio said her experiences as a student volunteer for the Illinois state health and PE organization, as well as her student teaching experiences, resulted in a career track change and love of the teaching profession.<\/p>\n<p>&ldquo;I hope that my expertise both in the <abbr>K<\/abbr>&#8211;12 setting and higher education will help contribute to the great work that is already being done,&rdquo; Centeio concluded. &ldquo;It is a goal of mine to help states work together to leverage collective advocacy and help them grow their own organizations, and in turn, grow participation in <abbr>SHAPE<\/abbr> America.&rdquo;<\/p>\n<p><abbr>COE<\/abbr> Dean <strong>Nathan Murata<\/strong> stated, &ldquo;Congratulations to Dr. Erin Centeio on her appointment as president-elect of <abbr>SHAPE<\/abbr> America, Western District. Her selection for this prestigious position with the largest health and physical education\/physical activity organization in the United States is significant. Dr. Centeio is a well-respected scholar, physical education teacher, educator and colleague to many.
