Sonny Ganaden presented a congratulatory certificate signed by members of the legislature to Department Chair Ty Tengan on April 26.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>The <a href=\"https:\/\/www.capitol.hawaii.gov\/\"><span aria-label=\"Hawaii\">Hawai&#699;i<\/span> State Legislature<\/a> recognized the 50th anniversary of the ethnic studies program in the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.socialsciences.hawaii.edu\/\">College of Social Sciences<\/a> at the University of <span aria-label=\"Hawaii\">Hawai&#699;i<\/span> at M\u0101noa. <abbr title=\"Representative\">Rep<\/abbr>. <strong>Sonny Ganaden<\/strong>, a former instructor in the <a href=\"https:\/\/ethnicstudies.manoa.hawaii.edu\/\">Department of Ethnic Studies<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/manoa.hawaii.edu\/amst\/\">Department of American Studies<\/a>, presented a congratulatory certificate signed by members of the legislature to Department Chair <strong>Ty Tengan<\/strong> on April 26.<\/p>\n<p>Ethnic studies started as a two-year experimental program in the fall of 1970 in the midst of several political movements. The ways that underserved communities are disproportionately affected by policing, criminal justice and by inappropriate laws continues to be something that we struggle with and the work that Professor Tengan and students do here is absolutely essential to holding democracy accountable,&rdquo; Ganaden said.<\/p>\n<h2>50th anniversary celebration<\/h2>\n<figure id=\"attachment_140381\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-140381\" style=\"width: 300px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/04\/manoa-ethnic-studies-ty-tengan-300x169.jpg\" alt=\"person smiling at the camera\" width=\"300\" height=\"169\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-140381\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/04\/manoa-ethnic-studies-ty-tengan-300x169.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/04\/manoa-ethnic-studies-ty-tengan-130x73.jpg 130w, https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/04\/manoa-ethnic-studies-ty-tengan.jpg 676w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-140381\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Ty Tengan<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Due to limitations with in-person gatherings, the department commemorated its 50th anniversary, &ldquo;50 years of ethnic studies: celebrating our past and reimagining our futures,&rdquo; on April 27 with a celebration via Zoom. More than 125 participants attended the virtual event. Tengan began the celebration with a chant. <abbr>Rep<\/abbr>. <strong>Roy Takumi<\/strong>, a <abbr>东精影业<\/abbr> M\u0101noa alumnus and former <abbr>ES<\/abbr> 330 Japanese in <span aria-label=\"Hawaii\">Hawai&#699;i<\/span> teaching assistant delivered remarks; and Tengan read a statement from <abbr title=\"Senator\">Sen<\/abbr>. <strong>Brian Taniguchi<\/strong>, who is also a <abbr>东精影业<\/abbr> M\u0101noa alumnus and former <abbr>ES<\/abbr> 330 Japanese in <span aria-label=\"Hawaii\">Hawai&#699;i<\/span> teaching assistant.<\/p>\n<p>Several current and former students congratulated the department through performances and spoke about their achievements in successful initiatives such as, the <a href=\"https:\/\/ethnicstudies.manoa.hawaii.edu\/bam\/\">five-year bachelor\u2019s and master\u2019s degree pathways in ethnic studies and education<\/a>, service learning, the work with Professor Davianna <span aria-label=\"Pomaikai\">P\u014dmaika&#699;i<\/span> McGregor on <span aria-label=\"Kahoolawe\">Kaho&#699;olawe<\/span> and the <a href=\"https:\/\/ethnicstudies.manoa.hawaii.edu\/center-for-oral-history\/\">Center for Oral History<\/a>\u2019s move into the Department of Ethnic Studies.<\/p>\n<p><abbr>东精影业<\/abbr> M\u0101noa Provost <strong>Michael Bruno<\/strong> and College of Social Sciences Dean <strong>Denise Eby Konan<\/strong> also honored the 50th anniversary of the ethnic studies program.<\/p>\n<p>&ldquo;We are so proud that ethnic studies has played a significant role at <abbr>东精影业<\/abbr> M\u0101noa,&rdquo; Konan said. &ldquo;The program has helped incoming freshmen adapt to the college experience through its summer bridge program.
