New startup company <a href=\"https:\/\/pulseutility.com\/\">Pulse Utility<\/a> won the <a href=\"https:\/\/pace.shidler.hawaii.edu\/uhvc\/\"><abbr>东精影业<\/abbr> Venture Competition<\/a> (<abbr>东精影业VC<\/abbr>), hosted by the <a href=\"https:\/\/pace.shidler.hawaii.edu\/\">Pacific Asian Center for Entrepreneurship<\/a> (<abbr>PACE<\/abbr>) in the <a href=\"https:\/\/shidler.hawaii.edu\/\">Shidler College of Business<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Led by <strong>Craig Opie<\/strong>, a <abbr>东精影业<\/abbr> M\u0101noa <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ics.hawaii.edu\/\">information and computer sciences<\/a> undergraduate student, Pulse Utility aims to assist the rail project with locating underground utilities along the rail line, a job that has added major costs and time to the project. Pulse Utility uses ground penetrating radar, a safe and non-invasive technology, to locate all buried infrastructure. Opie said the team plans to finish its data collection and present its solution to the Honolulu Authority for Rapid Transportation with the goal for a potential contract.<\/p>\n<p>&ldquo;This entire competition has been a lot of work and dedication by all of our team members, and it feels amazing to know that our hard work has paid off,&rdquo; Opie said. &ldquo;We are excited to provide our solution, which reduces time and money in the search and permitting process for buried utilities.&rdquo;<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/03\/manoa-oic-innovation-impact-challenge-300x169.jpg\" alt=\"logo that says Pulse Utility\" width=\"300\" height=\"169\" class=\"alignright size-medium wp-image-138074\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/03\/manoa-oic-innovation-impact-challenge-300x169.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/03\/manoa-oic-innovation-impact-challenge-130x73.jpg 130w, https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/03\/manoa-oic-innovation-impact-challenge.jpg 676w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Pulse Utility was one of three finalists which presented to a group of judges at the venture competition\u2019s final virtual event on May 5. <a href=\"https:\/\/youtu.be\/Hw74GQWtgV8\">View the event on <abbr>PACE<\/abbr>\u2019s YouTube channel<\/a>. Pulse Utility\u2019s prize package includes $10,000 from American Savings Bank, professional services by Vantage Counsel <abbr title=\"Limited Liability Company\">LLC<\/abbr>, Pineapple Tweed, Blue Logic Labs and Business Consulting Resources, and coworking space at The Hub Coworking Hawaii.<\/p>\n<p>Pulse Utility\u2019s team includes Opie, <strong>Yosef Ben Gershom<\/strong>, a <abbr>东精影业<\/abbr> M\u0101noa <a href=\"https:\/\/www.hsfl.hawaii.edu\/\"><span aria-label=\"Hawaii\">Hawai&#699;i<\/span> Space Flight Laboratory<\/a> mechanical engineer and <abbr>东精影业<\/abbr> M\u0101noa executive <abbr title=\"Masters in Business Administration\">MBA<\/abbr> student; <strong>Anthony Lopez<\/strong>, a <abbr>东精影业<\/abbr> M\u0101noa <a href=\"https:\/\/ee.hawaii.edu\/home\/\">electrical engineering<\/a> student; <strong>Josh O\u2019Neill<\/strong>, a Honolulu Community College <a href=\"https:\/\/www.honolulu.hawaii.edu\/csnt\">computing, security, and networking technology<\/a> student; and <strong>Isaac Rodrigues<\/strong>, co-owner of Death Star Development, <abbr>LLC<\/abbr> and a senior-level electrical engineer. The project centers on renewable ocean energy technology that balances wind and solar while making seawater desalination cheaper and cleaner.<\/p>\n<p>&ldquo;We are delighted with the hard work and persistence of all the teams throughout the competition season,&rdquo; <abbr>PACE<\/abbr> Executive Director <strong>Peter Rowan<\/strong> said. &ldquo;Despite the challenges of conducting the entire program online, we are very happy with the reach and impact this year. The quality of the competition was very high throughout every round and the results were excellent.&rdquo;<\/p>\n<h2>Wild card round<\/h2>\n<p>For the first time in the 21-year history of the <abbr>东精影业VC<\/abbr>, the public was invited to view the competition and actively participate. Five semi-finalists were invited to deliver a short presentation during the competition\u2019s wild card round for a chance at a $500 cash prize sponsored by ProService Hawaii voted by the audience.
