  {"id":141996,"date":"2021-05-20T13:53:08","date_gmt":"2021-05-20T23:53:08","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/?p=141996"},"modified":"2021-09-03T15:54:48","modified_gmt":"2021-09-04T01:54:48","slug":"redesign-hawaiian-studies-grounds","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/2021\/05\/20\/redesign-hawaiian-studies-grounds\/","title":{"rendered":"Landscape architecture student helps redesign Hawaiian studies grounds"},"content":{"rendered":"<span class=\"span-reading-time rt-reading-time\" style=\"display: block;\"><span class=\"rt-label rt-prefix\">Reading time: <\/span> <span class=\"rt-time\"> 3<\/span> <span class=\"rt-label rt-postfix\">minutes<\/span><\/span><p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/05\/manoa-architecture-hawaiian-studies-grounds.jpg\" alt=\"architecture design prints\" width=\"676\" height=\"381\" class=\"alignright size-full wp-image-142014\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/05\/manoa-architecture-hawaiian-studies-grounds.jpg 676w, https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/05\/manoa-architecture-hawaiian-studies-grounds-300x169.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/05\/manoa-architecture-hawaiian-studies-grounds-130x73.jpg 130w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 676px) 100vw, 676px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Using a landscape design framework rooted in Hawaiian principles and perspectives, a recent graduate student in the University of <span aria-label=\"Hawaii\">Hawai&#699;i<\/span> at M&#257;noa <a href=\"http:\/\/www.arch.hawaii.edu\/\">School of Architecture<\/a>\u2019s first Master of Landscape Architecture (<abbr>MLA<\/abbr>) cohort redesigned the <a href=\"https:\/\/manoa.hawaii.edu\/hshk\/kamakakuokalani\/\">Kamakak&#363;okalani Center for Hawaiian Studies<\/a> (<abbr>KCHS<\/abbr>) grounds for his capstone design research project.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Jonathan Kekaimalu Stanich<\/strong>\u2019s project, &ldquo;Nupaikini: Towards a New Hawaiian Design,&rdquo; proposed an alternative approach to maintaining the <abbr>KCHS<\/abbr> landscape by utilizing <span aria-label=\"aina\">&#699;&#257;ina<\/span> (land) based values and perspectives through using a graphic style based on traditional Hawaiian aesthetics, and references 18th century Hawaiian nupepa (newspaper) in a graphic <span aria-label=\"mook363auhau\">mo&#699;ok&#363;&#699;auhau<\/span> (genealogy).<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_142011\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-142011\" style=\"width: 200px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/05\/manoa-architecture-stanich-j.jpg\" alt=\"man smiling\" width=\"200\" height=\"300\" class=\"size-full wp-image-142011\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/05\/manoa-architecture-stanich-j.jpg 200w, https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/05\/manoa-architecture-stanich-j-87x130.jpg 87w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 200px) 100vw, 200px\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-142011\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Jonathan Kekaimalu Stanich<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Just as the k&#257;naka (Hawaiian subjects) of the 18th century renaissance embraced the influx of new technologies around them, Stanich believes modern k&#257;naka can also embrace revolutionary technologies in a Hawaiian way.<\/p>\n<p>&ldquo;One of the main reasons I chose Nupaikini as the title of this project is because taken together it is defined as &lsquo;new-fashioned,&rsquo; and it was important to me to stress that although this process is inspired by many traditional Hawaiian values and perspectives, it is a synthesis of how I, as a modern Hawaiian, believe we should design the world around us in a contemporary way,&rdquo; said Stanich.<\/p>\n<h2>Mapping microclimates<\/h2>\n<p>The project provides a modern konohiki (resource managers) 21st century tools to kilo (observe), specifically the creation of a new spatial plant placement algorithm, which can use 3D modeling software to map specific microclimates within <abbr>KCHS<\/abbr>.<\/p>\n<p>The algorithm then generates a list of plants that will grow best within those projected microclimates. This tool, coupled with on-site observations done by students and faculty, and coordinated requests for plant material and events, will help determine the right place for the right plant.<\/p>\n<p>&ldquo;As landscape architects, we have so much to learn from traditional Hawaiian land management systems and bio-cultural land and water practices,&rdquo; said <strong>Judith Stilgenbauer<\/strong>, <abbr>MLA<\/abbr> program director and graduate chair. &ldquo;Malu\u2019s innovative proposed planting design process is applicable to many other, similarly situated design problems across <abbr title=\"东精影业\">东精影业<\/abbr> campuses and the state.&rdquo;<\/p>\n<p>This effort is an example of <abbr>东精影业<\/abbr> M&#257;noa\u2019s goal of <a href=\"https:\/\/manoa.hawaii.edu\/wp\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/12\/manoa-2025-strategic-plan.pdf#page=12\">Becoming a Native Hawaiian Place of Learning<\/a> and <abbr>东精影业<\/abbr> M&#257;noa\u2019s goal of <a href=\"https:\/\/manoa.hawaii.edu\/wp\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/12\/manoa-2025-strategic-plan.pdf#page=20\">Enhancing Student Success<\/a> (<span class=\"small-text\"><abbr title=\"Portable Document Format\">PDF<\/abbr><\/span>), two of four goals identified in the <a href=\"https:\/\/manoa.hawaii.edu\/wp\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/12\/manoa-2025-strategic-plan.pdf\">2015&#8211;25 Strategic Plan<\/a> (<span class=\"small-text\"><abbr title=\"Portable Document Format\">PDF<\/abbr><\/span>), updated in December 2020.<\/p>\n<h2>Incorporating native folia<\/h2>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/05\/manoa-architecture-hawaiian-studies-grounds-2-300x169.jpg\" alt=\"architecture design prints\" width=\"300\" height=\"169\" class=\"alignright size-medium wp-image-142013\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/05\/manoa-architecture-hawaiian-studies-grounds-2-300x169.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/05\/manoa-architecture-hawaiian-studies-grounds-2-130x73.jpg 130w, https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/05\/manoa-architecture-hawaiian-studies-grounds-2.jpg 676w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>The design incorporates the native folia specific to the area, but gives precedence to plants used in Hawaiian studies curriculum and <abbr>KCHS<\/abbr> community such as: Palapalai (<em>Microlepia strigosa<\/em>), <span aria-label=\"Ukiuki\">&#699;Uki&#699;uki<\/span> (<em>Dianella sandwicensis<\/em>), <span aria-label=\"Olena\">&#699;&#332;lena<\/span> (<em>Curcuma domestica \/ longa<\/em>), <span aria-label=\"Mao\">Ma&#699;o<\/span> (<em>Gossypium sandvicense<\/em>), Milo (<em>Thespesia populnea<\/em>), K&#299; \/ <span aria-label=\"Lai\">L&#257;&#699;&#299;<\/span> (<em>Cordyline fruticosa<\/em>), <span aria-label=\"Palaa\">Pala&#699;&#257;<\/span> (<em>Sphenomeris chinensis<\/em>), M&#257;maki (<em>Pipturus albidus<\/em>), <span aria-label=\"Ilima\">&#699;&#298;lima<\/span> (<em>Sida fallax<\/em>), Naio (<em>Myoporum sandwicense<\/em>), Olona (<em>Touchardia latifolia<\/em>), Wauke (<em>Broussonetia papyrifera<\/em>) and <span aria-label=\"Ieie\">&#699;Ie&#699;ie<\/span> (<em>Freycinetia arborea<\/em>).<\/p>\n<p>&ldquo;The tools and methods outlined in this project can be taken and applied to other departments within campus to help share the workload to maintain the landscape and ultimately establish a connection between the university community and a Hawaiian sense of place,&rdquo; said Stanich. &ldquo;It is from this perspective where you cannot have a Hawaiian sense of place by planting native or canoe plants, the sense of place is generated by people interacting with those plants and shaping the landscape into something uniquely Hawaiian.&rdquo;<\/p>\n<p>Going forward, the project calls for the creation of student groups, faculty positions and larger community involvement in order to re-assume the role and responsibilities of a konohiki.<\/p>\n<p>&ldquo;This design, and the process from which it was generated, marks a shift in values and practices  in what it means to maintain an institutional campus landscape,&rdquo; added Stanich. &ldquo;It encourages active participation within the campus landscape.&rdquo;<\/p>\n<p>The case study used in the project originated through the <a href=\"http:\/\/manoa.hawaii.edu\/nhss\/programs\/na-pua-noeau-uh-manoa\/\"><span aria-label=\"Noeau\">No&#699;eau<\/span> Program<\/a>, in collaboration with <abbr>东精影业<\/abbr> M&#257;noa <a href=\"https:\/\/manoa.hawaii.edu\/bgm\/\">Building and Grounds Management<\/a>, <abbr>东精影业<\/abbr> M&#257;noa Campus Arboretum and <abbr>KCHS<\/abbr>.
