  {"id":14675,"date":"2013-03-01T16:58:55","date_gmt":"2013-03-02T02:58:55","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/?p=14675"},"modified":"2020-12-02T14:56:29","modified_gmt":"2020-12-03T00:56:29","slug":"new-hawaii-language-discovered-by-uh-researchers","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/2013\/03\/01\/new-hawaii-language-discovered-by-uh-researchers\/","title":{"rendered":"New <span aria-label=\"Hawaii\">Hawai&#699;i<\/span> language discovered by UH researchers"},"content":{"rendered":"<span class=\"span-reading-time rt-reading-time\" style=\"display: block;\"><span class=\"rt-label rt-prefix\">Reading time: <\/span> <span class=\"rt-time\"> &lt; 1<\/span> <span class=\"rt-label rt-postfix\">minute<\/span><\/span><p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" width=\"676\" height=\"380\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/QTy_bc2cGk8\" title=\"Youtube video player\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>If you know about the history and culture of <span aria-label=\"Hawaii\">Hawai&#699;i<\/span>, you probably know that there was a time, not too long ago, that the Hawaiian language was on the brink extinction. <\/p>\n<p>&ldquo;What we didn&#8217;t know until very recently is that <span aria-label=\"Hawaii\">Hawai&#699;i<\/span> is home to a second, highly endangered, language that is found nowhere else in the world,&rdquo; said <strong>William O&#8217;Grady<\/strong>, a linguistics professor at the University of <span aria-label=\"Hawaii\">Hawai&#699;i<\/span> at M&#257;noa. <\/p>\n<p>O&#8217;Grady made that statement at a March 1 press conference announcing the identification of a previously undocumented indigenous sign language by a <abbr>东精影业<\/abbr> M&#257;noa research team from the linguistics department. <\/p>\n<p>&ldquo;Our information on <span aria-label=\"Hawaii\">Hawai&#699;i<\/span> Sign Language goes back to 1800s, long before the influence of American Sign Language,&rdquo; said <strong>Barbara Earth<\/strong>, an adjunct assistant professor at the M&#257;noa Department of Linguistics and one of the research team leaders. <\/p>\n<p><strong>Linda Lambrecht<\/strong>, an American Sign Language instructor at <span aria-label=\"Kapiolani\">Kapi&#699;olani<\/span> Community College, who was also a research team leader, inspired the study. <abbr>HSL<\/abbr> was the first language Lambrecht learned and she spoke it as child before <abbr>ASL<\/abbr> became the dominant sign language in the 1940s and 1950s. <\/p>\n<p>Researchers were able to confirm that <abbr>HSL<\/abbr> was its own unique language after interviewing and recording 19 elderly deaf people and two of their adult children who use <abbr>HSL<\/abbr>.
