From a small farming town in Prosser, Washington, Felicijan credits his high school clubs with teaching him leadership and nurturing his creative side.<\/p>\n<p>During summers, Felicijan worked in the cherry orchards with his family to make extra money to pay for college. &ldquo;It was a very humbling job and taught me to value my education and to push myself to be the best version of myself that I can imagine,&rdquo; he said. &ldquo;Everything I did in high school I have used to build and prepare myself for my future.&rdquo;<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_147453\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-147453\" style=\"width: 300px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/09\/manoa-soest-pacioos-internship-300x169.jpg\" alt=\"people with crates\" width=\"300\" height=\"169\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-147453\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/09\/manoa-soest-pacioos-internship-300x169.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/09\/manoa-soest-pacioos-internship-130x73.jpg 130w, https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/09\/manoa-soest-pacioos-internship.jpg 676w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-147453\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Peter Felicijan during harvest season in Washington.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>His work ethic and enthusiasm has undoubtedly been a strength in the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.soest.hawaii.edu\/oceanography\/ges\/\">Global Environmental Science<\/a> (<abbr>GES<\/abbr>) bachelor\u2019s degree program in the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.soest.hawaii.edu\/oceanography\/\">Department of Oceanography<\/a> at <abbr title=\"东精影业\">东精影业<\/abbr> M&#257;noa\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.soest.hawaii.edu\/soestwp\/\">School of Ocean and Earth Science and Technology<\/a> (<abbr>SOEST<\/abbr>).<\/p>\n<h2>Nearshore sensor internship<\/h2>\n<p>Felicijan connected with <strong>Gordon Walker<\/strong>, an oceanographic technician with the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.pacioos.hawaii.edu\/\">Pacific Islands Ocean Observing System<\/a> (<abbr>PacIOOS<\/abbr>), after Walker came to Felicijan\u2019s <abbr>GES<\/abbr> 100 class as a guest lecturer to share his work which uses near shore sensors to better understand water quality and the physical dynamics of coastal waters&#8212;sparking Felicijan\u2019s interest.<\/p>\n<p>Impressed by Felicijan\u2019s enthusiasm and curiosity, Walker recommended him for an internship with the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.pacioos.hawaii.edu\/water-category\/sensor\/\"><abbr>PacIOOS<\/abbr> Nearshore Sensor Group<\/a> led by <strong>Margaret McManus<\/strong>, professor and chair of the Department of Oceanography. His main responsibilities include assisting Walker and Wriston by snorkeling to recover nearshore sensors, downloading data and performing a variety of lab services or repairs to ensure the data are accurate.<\/p>\n<p>&ldquo;Before coming to <abbr>东精影业<\/abbr> I didn\u2019t have any experience in this area of science or work,&rdquo; said Felicijan. &ldquo;All I knew was to work hard and perform my best every day. I have enjoyed the wonderful stress-free work environment that Gordon and Shaun have made.
