The theatre\u2019s anticipated 2021-22 mainstage season opener will be streamed online, giving audiences the opportunity to tune in amidst the COVID-19 pandemic. The world premiere hana keaka or <a href=\"https:\/\/manoa.hawaii.edu\/liveonstage\/theatre\/hawaiian-theatre\/\">Hawaiian Theatre program<\/a>  production, <em><a href=\"http:\/\/manoa.hawaii.edu\/liveonstage\/heleoaloha\/\">He Leo Aloha<\/a><\/em>, follows the story of a group of kanaka maoli (Native Hawaiian) students at <abbr title=\"东精影业\">东精影业<\/abbr> M\u0101noa and their struggles with finding and navigating love and the meaning of true aloha.<\/p>\n<p>The production performed exclusively in &#699;\u014dlelo <span aria-label=\"Hawaii\">Hawai&#699;i<\/span> (Hawaiian language) was written and directed by <strong>Kaipulaumakaniolono<\/strong>, a theatre <abbr title=\"Master of Fine Arts\">MFA<\/abbr> candidate. &ldquo;Although it\u2019s a regular story about someone getting caught cheating and then all the friends getting involved, what makes it interesting is they\u2019re not going to go gossiping about each other. They\u2019re going to turn to traditional mele (songs) and really use the insights gathered from those songs we\u2019ve been singing for generations to figure out what love is and how to love each other better,&rdquo; Kaipulaumakaniolono explained. &ldquo;To me, \u2018true aloha\u2019 is to love somebody and want what is best for them regardless of your personal jealousies or your personal ties to them. \u2018True aloha\u2019 lets them do what they need to do for themselves.&rdquo;<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.showtix4u.com\/events\/kennedytheatre\">Ticket prices for <abbr>东精影业<\/abbr> faculty, staff and students range $5&#8211;$10<\/a> for the virtual production set to premiere October 8 and 9 at 7:30 p.m. and October 10 at 2 p.m. The story incorporates traditional mele and original oli (chants) to accentuate and highlight the importance of language and the power that it carries. A 12-piece live band will be featured under the direction of Kumu <strong>R. Keawe Lopes Jr.<\/strong>, director of the <abbr>东精影业<\/abbr> M\u0101noa <a href=\"https:\/\/manoa.hawaii.edu\/hshk\/kawaihuelani\/\">Kawaihuelani Center for Hawaiian Language<\/a>. The musical arrangements are made possible through a special collaboration with <abbr>东精影业<\/abbr> M\u0101noa mele preservation center, <a href=\"https:\/\/manoa.hawaii.edu\/hshk\/kawaihuelani\/hana\/ka-waihona-a-ke-aloha\/\">Ka Waihona A Ke Aloha<\/a> and the Tuahine Troupe from the Hawaiian Language department.<\/p>\n<p>&ldquo;Regardless of your experience with &#699;\u014dlelo <span aria-label=\"Hawaii\">Hawai&#699;i<\/span>, you should be able to appreciate, connect to and understand what\u2019s going on with the story,&rdquo; Kaipulaumakaniolono said. &ldquo;People who don\u2019t speak [the languages in] opera still go and appreciate it. It\u2019s my personal responsibility to make sure the story can be understood and I\u2019m certain that it will.&rdquo;<\/p>\n<h2>The flourishing of hana keaka<\/h2>\n<p>In 2014, the Hawaiian Theatre program was formally established at <abbr>东精影业<\/abbr> M\u0101noa by Associate Professor <strong>Tammy <span aria-label=\"Hailiopua\">Haili&#699;&#333;pua<\/span> Baker<\/strong>. <em><span aria-label=\"Laieikawai\">L&#257;&#699;ieikawai<\/span><\/em>, an inaugural hana keaka production she wrote and directed, played to sold out audiences on the Kennedy Theatre mainstage in 2014 before touring to <span aria-label=\"Hawaii\">Hawai&#699;i<\/span> Island, <span aria-label=\"Molokai\">Moloka&#699;i<\/span>, <span aria-label=\"Kauai\">Kaua&#699;i<\/span> and Aotearoa (New Zealand).
