Ongoing concerns about the health and well-being of Native Hawaiian students, faculty and staff at the University of <span aria-label=\"Hawaii\">Hawai&#699;i<\/span> reignited Indigenous education work committee <a href=\"https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/hawaiipapaokeao\/\"><span aria-label=\"Hawaii\">Hawai&#699;i<\/span> Papa O Ke Ao<\/a> (<abbr>HPOKA<\/abbr>) to bring back a cultural webinar series to help foster Indigenous well-being.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Related <em><abbr>东精影业<\/abbr> News<\/em> story:<\/strong> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/2020\/10\/13\/cultural-webinar-series-to-uplift-during-pandemic\/\">Cultural webinar series launched to uplift during pandemic<\/a>, October 13, 2020<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>In October 2020, <abbr>HPOKA<\/abbr> created a bi-monthly virtual series called He Ukana Aloha K\u0101 K\u012blauea, showcasing music, dance and storytelling hosted by sources from across <abbr>东精影业<\/abbr>\u2019s 10 campuses. This year, the series will celebrate accomplishments of regional <span aria-label=\"alii\">ali&#699;i<\/span> (royalty) through historical accounts, stories and songs.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_148466\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-148466\" style=\"width: 300px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/09\/system-hpoka-2-kings-300x169.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"169\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-148466\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/09\/system-hpoka-2-kings-300x169.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/09\/system-hpoka-2-kings-130x73.jpg 130w, https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/09\/system-hpoka-2-kings.jpg 676w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-148466\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">King David Kal\u0101kaua and King Kamehameha <abbr title=\"the fifth\">V<\/abbr><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>&ldquo;We want them to learn from our Hawaiian history and how our <span aria-label=\"alii\">ali&#699;i<\/span> addressed the social, economic and health needs of the Hawaiian nation, such as Kamehameha <abbr title=\"the fifth\">V<\/abbr> for whom the series is named after and how he freighted up the K\u012blauea steamer in 1868 to deliver supplies, medicine and food to communities on <span aria-label=\"Molokai\">Moloka&#699;i<\/span> due to the collapse of resources on the island and the destructive volcanic activity of Maunaloa on <span aria-label=\"Hawaii\">Hawai&#699;i<\/span> Island,&rdquo; said <strong>Gail Mililani Makuak\u0101ne-Lundin<\/strong>, <abbr>HPOKA<\/abbr> director. &ldquo;Lili\u02bbuokalani helped stop the spread of smallpox by imposing a strict quarantine in 1881, and Queen <span aria-label=\"Kapiolani\">Kapi&#699;olani<\/span> acted upon her concern for the welfare of <span aria-label=\"Hawaii\">Hawai&#699;i<\/span>\u2019s mothers and babies by raising funds in 1890 to establish what we know today as the <span aria-label=\"Kapiolani\">Kapi&#699;olani<\/span> Medical Center for Women and Children. King William Lunalilo\u2019s legacy is Lunalilo Home which honors and protects the well-being of Hawaiian k\u016bpuna.&rdquo;<\/p>\n<p>On Wednesday, September 29 at noon, the yearlong series will return featuring <strong>Nalani Balutski<\/strong>, a <abbr>东精影业<\/abbr> M\u0101noa research and assessment specialist at <a href=\"https:\/\/manoa.hawaii.edu\/hshk\/\"><span aria-label=\"Hawaiinuakea\">Hawai&#699;inu&#257;kea<\/span><\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/manoa.hawaii.edu\/nhss\/\">Native Hawaiian Student Services<\/a>. Balutski will present about King David Kal\u0101kaua and the <a href=\"https:\/\/manoa.hawaii.edu\/nhss\/programs\/hawaiian-youths-abroad-program\/\">Hawaiian Youths Abroad Program<\/a> which retraces the path of 18 Hawaiian youth who were personally selected by the king to be part of an educational diplomatic program designed to train future leaders for <span aria-label=\"Hawaii\">Hawai&#699;i<\/span> in areas of engineering, medicine, art, music, military science and foreign languages in six countries around the world.
