The <a href=\"https:\/\/uhcc.hawaii.edu\/\"><abbr>东精影业<\/abbr> Community Colleges<\/a>\u2019 Project Imua Mission 9 team won the extreme altitude hybrid motor competition with the launch of their 12-foot, eight-inch hybrid rocket, named &ldquo;Apophis&rdquo; after the Egyptian god of chaos.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_150668\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-150668\" style=\"width: 250px\" class=\"wp-caption alignleft\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/10\/system-project-imua-apophis-launch-pad.jpg\" alt=\"People standing in front of a rocket\" width=\"250\" height=\"350\" class=\"size-full wp-image-150668\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/10\/system-project-imua-apophis-launch-pad.jpg 250w, https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/10\/system-project-imua-apophis-launch-pad-214x300.jpg 214w, https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/10\/system-project-imua-apophis-launch-pad-93x130.jpg 93w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 250px) 100vw, 250px\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-150668\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Project Imua team in Nevada, front right Nikki Arakawa (Photo credit: Tahoma Photography)<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Students from <a href=\"https:\/\/windward.hawaii.edu\/\">Windward Community College<\/a> originally designed and built this rocket for the <a href=\"https:\/\/spaceportamericacup.com\/\">Spaceport America Cup<\/a>\u2019s competition sponsored by the Experimental Sounding Rocket Association that was to be held during the summer in New Mexico, but was canceled due to the COVID-19 pandemic. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.honolulu.hawaii.edu\/\">Honolulu Community College<\/a> students designed an atmospheric sensing payload to be carried aboard Apophis.<\/p>\n<p>The rocket and payload were finally launched in September 2021 in Black Rock, Nevada as part of the <a href=\"https:\/\/dev.aeropac.org\/\">Association of Experimental Rocketry of the Pacific<\/a> (AERO-PAC)\u2019s competition. The lessons learned on this mission will launch them on exciting careers.&rdquo;<\/p>\n<p>The two campuses are currently collaborating on Project Imua Mission 10 to develop a scientific payload that will be launched into sub-orbital flight this summer from NASA&#8217;s Wallops Flight Facility in Virginia. This will be Project Imua\u2019s fourth payload launched into outer space.
