Here are their inspiring stories of educational transformation.<\/p>\n<h2>Former foster child<\/h2>\n<figure id=\"attachment_151490\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-151490\" style=\"width: 300px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/11\/leeward-hinet-sabado-a-feature-300x300.jpg\" alt=\"woman at Leeward C C commencement\" width=\"300\" height=\"300\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-151490\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/11\/leeward-hinet-sabado-a-feature-300x300.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/11\/leeward-hinet-sabado-a-feature-130x130.jpg 130w, https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/11\/leeward-hinet-sabado-a-feature.jpg 676w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-151490\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Ayshialyn Sabado graduated from Leeward <abbr>CC<\/abbr> in spring 2021.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>One would never know, meeting <strong>Ayshialyn Sabado<\/strong>, of the challenges she was up against during what she calls &ldquo;rough childhood&rdquo; as a foster child. Sabado said taking classes in art and acting at Leeward <abbr>CC<\/abbr> gave her the focus and drive that were instrumental in earning an <abbr title=\"associate of arts\">AA<\/abbr> in business management.<\/p>\n<p>Sabado credits <abbr>HINET<\/abbr> with helping her to become the poised and confident young woman she is today. She credits the program for giving her the opportunity to explore classes that sparked her interest.<\/p>\n<p>&ldquo;Having the opportunity for somebody to refund and help me with books was a big thing, because I\u2019m not working right now,&rdquo; Sabado said.<\/p>\n<p>She is currently pursuing a bachelor\u2019s degree at the <a href=\"https:\/\/westoahu.hawaii.edu\/\">University of <span aria-label=\"Hawaii\u2013West\">Hawai&#699;i\u2013West<\/span> <span aria-label=\"Oahu\">O&#699;ahu<\/span><\/a>.<\/p>\n<h2>Working mother of two<\/h2>\n<figure id=\"attachment_151489\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-151489\" style=\"width: 250px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/11\/leeward-hinet-jury-s.jpg\" alt=\"woman\" width=\"250\" height=\"350\" class=\"size-full wp-image-151489\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/11\/leeward-hinet-jury-s.jpg 250w, https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/11\/leeward-hinet-jury-s-214x300.jpg 214w, https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/11\/leeward-hinet-jury-s-93x130.jpg 93w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 250px) 100vw, 250px\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-151489\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Sanoe Jury<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p><strong>Sanoe Jury<\/strong> knows firsthand the importance of having a strong support system. While raising two children under the age of two, studying as a full-time Leeward <abbr>CC<\/abbr> student and working part-time as a physician practice coordinator at Queen\u2019s Medical Center, Jury had to deal with the unfortunate passing of her mother. She worried about how she was going to survive, but discovered <abbr>HINET<\/abbr> and soon realized that help was available to struggling students.<\/p>\n<p>Jury said the program, her children and her Leeward <abbr>CC<\/abbr> counselors, &ldquo;held me accountable to what I had to do&rdquo; as she navigated classes for skills such as medical coding.<\/p>\n<p>The program has acted as a liaison for Jury and provided assistance, so she could pursue an associate of science degree in <a href=\"http:\/\/www.leeward.hawaii.edu\/HIT\">health information technology<\/a>. She is on track to graduate in spring 2022.<\/p>\n<h2>Former prison inmate<\/h2>\n<p>57-year-old <strong>Christine Gaudette<\/strong> said, &ldquo;It is never too late to better yourself and get your life straight.&rdquo; Originally from <span aria-label=\"Kahaluu\">Kahalu&#699;u<\/span>, Gaudette was placed in foster care at the age of 10 years old. When she was 17 years old, she committed a serious crime and ended up in prison for eight years. For the next few years she was in and out of prison until one day she decided it was time to choose a different life.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/tag\/hinet\/\">Read more <em><abbr>东精影业<\/abbr> News<\/em> stories on the <abbr>HINET<\/abbr> program<\/a><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>Gaudette began taking classes at Leeward <abbr>CC<\/abbr>\u2019s <a href=\"http:\/\/www.leeward.hawaii.edu\/WaianaeMoku\"><span aria-label=\"Waianae\">Wai&#699;anae<\/span> Moku Education Center<\/a>. In her second semester, financial problems hit, and she was prepared to drop out.  If it wasn\u2019t for her counselor telling her about <abbr>HINET<\/abbr>, Gaudette would have probably returned to her old way of life. Instead, the program paid for her books, Interactive Digital Access Program, Internet service, and gave her the encouragement she needed to continue attending college.<\/p>\n<p>&ldquo;(<abbr>HINET<\/abbr> Coordinator) <strong>JoAnn Cagasan<\/strong> was always there for me whenever I needed help, and, if her department couldn\u2019t help, she would point me in the right direction and send me the information on who to contact.
