The COVID-19 pandemic has only exacerbated the need for many to seek more funding to keep up with tuition, housing and more. For more than a decade, <span aria-label=\"Hawaiinuakea\">Hawai&#699;inu&#257;kea<\/span> has maintained a student emergency aid fund, however the pandemic has contributed to its depletion.<\/p>\n<p>&ldquo;Statistically, college students living away from home with few safety nets as they pursue their education, are piling up personal debt and wondering how much longer they can continue to enroll,&rdquo; said <span aria-label=\"Hawaiinuakea\">Hawai&#699;inu&#257;kea<\/span> Dean <strong>Jon <span aria-label=\"Kamakawiwoole\">Kamakawiwo&#699;ole<\/span> Osorio<\/strong>. &ldquo;We are at the mid-term of the fourth semester since <span aria-label=\"Hawaii\">Hawai&#699;i<\/span> was seized by the COVID-19 pandemic. We have all seen our public and private schools grapple with rules, logistics, unfamiliar technologies, worried parents and teachers, and a shortage of resources to try and meet our responsibilities to educate our people. While it has not been easy for anyone, I am especially concerned with how our haum\u0101na have fared.&rdquo;<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_152145\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-152145\" style=\"width: 300px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/11\/manoa-hawaiinuiakea-osorio-ohana-300x169.jpg\" alt=\"Jon Osorio and his kids\" width=\"300\" height=\"169\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-152145\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/11\/manoa-hawaiinuiakea-osorio-ohana-300x169.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/11\/manoa-hawaiinuiakea-osorio-ohana-130x73.jpg 130w, https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/11\/manoa-hawaiinuiakea-osorio-ohana.jpg 676w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-152145\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Osorio &#699;ohana<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>To help raise funds for haum\u0101na in need, <span aria-label=\"Hawaiinuakea\">Hawai&#699;inu&#257;kea<\/span> will launch its very first online auction. Bidding for the virtual silent auction, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.biddingforgood.com\/auction\/auctionhome.action?vhost=hshk\">Ka ea o n\u0101 <span aria-label=\"ia\">i&#699;a<\/span> he wai<\/a>, opens on November 24 at 8 a.m. until December 1, 11:59 p.m. HST. Some of the featured items include one-of-a-kind experiences, such as a cultural practitioner led p\u0101hoa <span aria-label=\"au\">a&#699;u<\/span> (marlin dagger) workshop, <span aria-label=\"mahiai\">mahi&#699;ai<\/span> kalo (taro farmer) starter kit filled with 10 kalo varieties, and a one-hour music performance by Osorio and &#699;ohana.<\/p>\n<p>A preview of some of the items up for auction will continue to be posted ahead of the event.<\/p>\n<p>&ldquo;We need your support,&rdquo; exclaimed <strong>Malia Nobrega<\/strong>, Director of Strategic Partnerships at <span aria-label=\"Hawaiinuakea\">Hawai&#699;inu&#257;kea<\/span>. &ldquo;This is an exciting and fun way to help our students, and at the same time have a chance to win creative, fun and unique items and experiences from community practitioners and friends!&rdquo;<\/p>\n<p>The department hopes to raise $20,000 for its haum\u0101na emergency fund. Through the years, deans have organized annual fundraisers and maintained a fund to help students who faced unanticipated situations that could impact their education, housing, medical care and other aspects of their welfare.<\/p>\n<p>The auction\u2019s name, Ka ea o n\u0101 <span aria-label=\"ia\">i&#699;a<\/span> he wai (the ea of fish is water), traces back to an infamous speech given in M\u0101noa in 1871 to commemorate L\u0101 <span aria-label=\"Hoihoi\">Ho&#699;iho&#699;i<\/span> Ea (Sovereignty Restoration Day).
