Burns School of Medicine\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/jabsom.hawaii.edu\/centers-institutes\/hawaii-center-for-aids\/\"><span aria-label=\"Hawaii\">Hawai&#699;i<\/span> Center for <abbr>AIDS<\/abbr><\/a> (<abbr>HICFA<\/abbr>) were recognized with the 2021 Suzanne Richard-Crum Award at the annual <a href=\"https:\/\/urldefense.com\/v3\/__https:\/worldaidsdayhawaii.org\/__;!p54XP4V2edI!hI7v1qRtT9Os1dEINHUfK4egflaQQ_Wqp5K02yKQixsVCaCY_SDQUCS7BDVTrOSiMPY9tqXdfg$\">World <abbr>AIDS<\/abbr> Day ceremony <\/a> on December 1. The virtual event took place at 6 p.m.<\/p>\n<p>The award is presented by the <span aria-label=\"Hawaii\">Hawai&#699;i<\/span> Department of Health (<abbr>DOH<\/abbr>)-Harm Reduction Services Branch to recognize those who have made &ldquo;outstanding contributions in providing <abbr>HIV\/AIDS<\/abbr> services.&rdquo; In honor of the <abbr>HICFA<\/abbr> nurses, Gov. David Ige has also proclaimed December 1, 2021 as &ldquo;Nurses of the <span aria-label=\"Hawaii\">Hawai&#699;i<\/span> Center for <abbr>AIDS<\/abbr> Day.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Under the leadership of its director <strong>Cecilia Shikuma<\/strong>, <abbr>HICFA<\/abbr> conducts research to evaluate optimal therapies for <abbr>HIV<\/abbr> infection and <abbr>AIDS<\/abbr>-associated complications, increase understanding of the disease, and transfer research findings to improve the quality of life for those living with <abbr>HIV<\/abbr>. <abbr>HICFA<\/abbr> operates the Clint Spencer Clinic on <span aria-label=\"Oahu\">O&#699;ahu<\/span>, Maui and <span aria-label=\"Hawaii\">Hawai&#699;i<\/span> Island, and provides care to about 500 patients living with <abbr>HIV<\/abbr> statewide.<\/p>\n<p>For more than 30 years, <abbr>HICFA<\/abbr> nurses have been dedicated to ending <abbr>HIV<\/abbr> and its stigma. They stepped forward to uphold the values of the nursing profession in the early days of the <abbr>AIDS<\/abbr> epidemic when fear and discrimination were widespread. They have provided essential medical care to hundreds of people living with <abbr>HIV\/AIDS<\/abbr>. <\/p>\n<p>The group has contributed to important research in numerous clinical trials for effective treatments and toward finding a cure. Their work with <abbr>AIDS<\/abbr> service organizations and <abbr>HIV<\/abbr> housing programs has also elevated the level of health care among people living with <abbr>HIV<\/abbr> in <span aria-label=\"Hawaii\">Hawai&#699;i<\/span>.<\/p>\n<p>&ldquo;The current COVID pandemic reminds us of the challenges we faced when the <abbr>HIV<\/abbr> epidemic began four decades ago,&rdquo; said Glenn Wasserman, chief of the <abbr>DOH<\/abbr>\u2019s Communicable Disease and Public Health Nursing Division. &ldquo;Our former Department of Health colleague, Suzanne Richard-Crum, would be proud of the <abbr>HICFA<\/abbr> nurses, who have worked tirelessly on the frontlines, providing direct patient care and taking the time to build meaningful bonds with their patients, seeing the whole person, not just the disease.&rdquo;<\/p>\n<p>The entire nursing staff of <abbr>HICFA<\/abbr>, past and present, are being honored for their dedication and self-sacrifice. The <abbr>HICFA<\/abbr> nursing team includes: <strong>Debbie Ogata-Arakaki<\/strong> (retired), <strong>Nancy Hanks<\/strong> (retired), <strong>Cris Milne<\/strong>, <strong>Lorna Nagamine<\/strong>, <strong>Maya Barney<\/strong> and <strong>Mary Lichota<\/strong>. The past nurses whose dedication and commitment left long lasting impacts include: <strong>Paul Coelho<\/strong>, <strong>Nicole Valcour<\/strong>, <strong>Joanne Frederick Auskern<\/strong>, <strong>Jo McKeague<\/strong>, <strong>Lyle Oshita<\/strong>, <strong>Monica Millard<\/strong>, <strong>James Cairl<\/strong>, <strong>Sandra Akina<\/strong> and <strong>Sue Congdon<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>Suzanne Richmond-Crum served for more than a decade as director of the <span aria-label=\"Hawaii\">Hawai&#699;i<\/span> Seropositivity and Medical Management Program of the <span aria-label=\"Hawaii\">Hawai&#699;i<\/span> Department of Health\u2019s Harm Reduction Services Branch and passed away in August 2004.
