David Ige. &ldquo;Not only do their achievements keep utility costs down and create a more sustainable environment for them individually as businesses, they also are collectively contributing to <span aria-label=\"Hawaii\u2019s\">Hawai&#699;i\u2019s<\/span> clean energy goals.&rdquo;<\/p>\n<p>Through a combination of solar photovoltaic energy, distributed energy storage and energy efficiency measures, <abbr title=\"东精影业\">东精影业<\/abbr> Maui College has reduced the campus\u2019 use of fossil fuel for energy by an estimated 100&#37;.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_134291\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-134291\" style=\"width: 300px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/01\/maui-campus-net-zero-1-300x300.jpg\" alt=\"Aerial photo of photovoltaic panels\" width=\"300\" height=\"300\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-134291\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/01\/maui-campus-net-zero-1-300x300.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/01\/maui-campus-net-zero-1-130x130.jpg 130w, https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/01\/maui-campus-net-zero-1.jpg 676w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-134291\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Photovoltaic panels at UH Maui College.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>&ldquo;While there have been many initiatives on Maui in support of sustainability, <abbr>东精影业<\/abbr> Maui College seeks to unify these efforts to change the paradigm,&rdquo; said Chancellor <strong>Lui Hokoana<\/strong> &ldquo;As in most communities, this can be attributed to the complexities that arise from the breadth and duration of persistent sustainability issues. State-of-the-art practices in sustainability science provide new opportunities to implement a longer-term approach and to avoid unforeseen consequences which have resulted in taxing consequences to our community, resources and <span aria-label=\"aina\">&#699;&#257;ina<\/span>. Understanding and addressing the problem rather than treating the symptoms will require a complete change in traditional methods of thinking.&rdquo;<\/p>\n<p>The businesses and events honored at this year\u2019s <abbr>HGBP<\/abbr> awards ceremony undertook a wide array of green initiatives that included planting native and endemic plants to reduce the need for excessive irrigation, using low-flow faucets and shower heads to reduce water consumption, installing <abbr title=\"light-emitting diode\">LED<\/abbr> lights and solar panels, recycling paper and food scraps, and implementing incentives to encourage employees to commute by bike.<\/p>\n<p>The 2021 Hawaii Green Business Program awardees are:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Kings\u2019 Land by Hilton Grand Vacations<\/li>\n<li>Outrigger Reef Waikiki Beach Resort<\/li>\n<li>Outrigger Waikiki Beach Resort<\/li>\n<li>OHANA Waikiki East by Outrigger<\/li>\n<li>Waikiki Malia by Outrigger<\/li>\n<li>Waikiki Beachcomber by Outrigger<\/li>\n<li>The Westin Nanea Ocean Villas<\/li>\n<li>The Volcano House<\/li>\n<li>Prince Waikiki<\/li>\n<li>The <span aria-label=\"Hawaii\">Hawai&#699;i<\/span> Convention Center<\/li>\n<li>University of <span aria-label=\"Hawaii\">Hawai&#699;i<\/span> Maui College<\/li>\n<li>Honeywell<\/li>\n<li>2021 Sony Open<\/li>\n<li>2021 Sentry Tournament of Champions<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>The awards ceremony was hosted by the Hawaii State Energy Office, <span aria-label=\"Hawaii\">Hawai&#699;i<\/span> Department of Health and Honolulu Board of Water Supply.
