As part of their <abbr title=\"United States\">U.S.<\/abbr> Naval History course, the 25 midshipmen donned virtual reality (<abbr>VR<\/abbr>) headsets and were immersed in a 360-degree digital experience of the events of the attack through two newly released <abbr>VR<\/abbr>s from <a href=\"https:\/\/www.pacifichistoricparks.org\/\">Pacific Historic Parks<\/a>. <\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_155815\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-155815\" style=\"width: 300px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/02\/manoa-nrotc-virtual-reality-feature-300x300.jpg\" alt=\"midshipmen wearing vr headsets\" width=\"300\" height=\"300\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-155815\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/02\/manoa-nrotc-virtual-reality-feature-300x300.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/02\/manoa-nrotc-virtual-reality-feature-130x130.jpg 130w, https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/02\/manoa-nrotc-virtual-reality-feature.jpg 676w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-155815\" class=\"wp-caption-text\"><abbr>东精影业<\/abbr> M\u0101noa <abbr title=\" Naval Reserve Officers Training Corps\">NROTC<\/abbr> midshipmen experience Pacific Historic Parks new <abbr title=virtual reality\">VR<\/abbr>s.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>The narrated <abbr>VR<\/abbr>s, titled &ldquo;Air Raid Pearl Harbor&rdquo; and &ldquo;Skies Over Pearl,&rdquo; placed them on the deck of the <em><abbr>USS<\/abbr> Utah<\/em>, one of the battleships destroyed on that Sunday morning, and also put them in the cockpit of a Japanese fighter plane as it departed the carrier <em>Akagi<\/em> 230 miles north of <span aria-label=\"Oahu\">O&#699;ahu<\/span> and headed toward the military airfields and Pearl Harbor.<\/p>\n<p>&ldquo;It was important for them to see this virtual reality simulation because as <span aria-label=\"Hawaii\">Hawai&#699;i<\/span>\u2019s first Naval <abbr title=\"Reserve Officers Training Corps\">ROTC<\/abbr> Command, [the students] need to see what is in their region\u2019s background and their history,&rdquo; said Lt. <strong>Sawyer Smith<\/strong>, <abbr title=\"Naval Reserve Officers Training Corps\">NROTC<\/abbr> aviation officer and instructor of the course. &ldquo;It teaches them how to understand the severity of the Pearl Harbor attack, and teaches them a history lesson through different aspects of what made that battle so significant.&rdquo;<\/p>\n<p>The experience told the story of the 1941 attack in a new way, and helped the group of future military leaders, who were not born when 9\/11 happened, to better understand and prepare in the event of an attack similar to Dec. 7 or 9\/11. <\/p>\n<p><strong>Dylan Yamaguchi<\/strong>, a 4th class <abbr>NROTC<\/abbr> midshipman, who plans to join the <abbr>U.S.<\/abbr> Marine Corps after graduating said it was an innovative experience. &ldquo;I thought it was pretty interesting because it was a new way of learning our history. In the history books, we could read it and imagine it in our minds, but the <abbr>VR<\/abbr> headsets actually showed us what it really was like,&rdquo; he said.<\/p>\n<p>&ldquo;Air Raid Pearl Harbor&rdquo; and &ldquo;Skies Over Pearl&rdquo; run about 6 minutes each and are currently shown at the <a href=\"https:\/\/fareharbor.com\/embeds\/book\/phptours\/items\/43389\/calendar\/2022\/02\/?flow=260363&#038;full-items=yes\">Pearl Harbor Virtual Reality Center<\/a> at the <abbr>USS<\/abbr> Arizona Memorial.
