(Photo credit: <abbr>HOT<\/abbr> Program)<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>As carbon dioxide emissions have increased in the atmosphere, the ocean has absorbed a greater amount of carbon according to a publication co-authored by University of <span aria-label=\"Hawaii\">Hawai&#699;i<\/span> at M&#257;noa <a href=\"https:\/\/www.soest.hawaii.edu\/oceanography\/\">oceanography<\/a> Professor <strong>Christopher Sabine<\/strong> and selected as a 2021 Outstanding Scientific Paper by <abbr title=\"National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration\">NOAA<\/abbr>\u2019s Oceanic and Atmospheric Research.<\/p>\n<p>The study, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.science.org\/doi\/10.1126\/science.aau5153\">published in <em>Science<\/em><\/a>, reported that the world\u2019s oceans absorbed 34 billion metric tons of carbon from human activity between 1994 and 2007&#8212;a four-fold increase to 2.6 billion metric tons per year when compared to the average uptake for the period starting from the Industrial Revolution in 1800 to 1994.<\/p>\n<p>Despite this increase, the percentage of emissions&#8212;about 31&#37;&#8212;absorbed by the ocean has remained relatively stable when compared to the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.science.org\/doi\/10.1126\/science.1097403\">first survey<\/a> of carbon in the global ocean published by Sabine and co-authors in 2004.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_148794\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-148794\" style=\"width: 300px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/09\/manoa-soest-christopher-sabine.jpg\" alt=\"man smiling\" width=\"300\" height=\"300\" class=\"size-full wp-image-148794\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/09\/manoa-soest-christopher-sabine.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/09\/manoa-soest-christopher-sabine-130x130.jpg 130w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-148794\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Christopher Sabine<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>&ldquo;The uptake and storage in the ocean of human-produced carbon dioxide has significantly decreased the climate change effects the planet has seen so far,&rdquo; said Sabine, who is also the interim vice provost for research and scholarship. &ldquo;Getting a handle on how much more the ocean can take before marine ecosystems are severely compromised is critical for predicting future climate change impacts.&rdquo;<\/p>\n<p>By absorbing carbon dioxide from the atmosphere, the ocean reduces the warming impact these emissions would have had if the carbon dioxide had remained in the atmosphere.
