Both were chosen for the coveted role after demonstrating exceptional academic excellence and emulating <abbr>HSHK<\/abbr>\u2019s mission to pursue, perpetuate, research, and revitalize areas and forms of Hawaiian knowledge.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/tag\/commencement\/\">More highlights from the commencement ceremonies and our amazing graduates<\/a><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>&ldquo;As proud as we are of all our graduates, those of the past two years who have persevered and succeeded in these extremely trying times, are distinctive,&rdquo; said Dean <strong>Jon <span aria-label=\"Kamakawiwoole\">Kamakawiwo&#699;ole<\/span> Osorio<\/strong>. &ldquo;Huro (cheers) to our student marshals and all of their hoapapa (classmates).&rdquo;<\/p>\n<h2>&#699;Ike (knowledge) fusion<\/h2>\n<figure id=\"attachment_159123\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-159123\" style=\"width: 300px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/05\/manoa-hawaiinuiakea-oshiro-k-300x169.jpg\" alt=\"Kamalani Keao Oshiro\" width=\"300\" height=\"169\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-159123\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/05\/manoa-hawaiinuiakea-oshiro-k-300x169.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/05\/manoa-hawaiinuiakea-oshiro-k-130x73.jpg 130w, https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/05\/manoa-hawaiinuiakea-oshiro-k.jpg 676w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-159123\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Kamalani Keao Oshiro<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Oshiro, who was born and raised in Los Angeles, always yearned to learn more about his ancestral roots as a Native Hawaiian. His <span aria-label=\"mookuauhau\">mo&#699;ok&#363;&#699;auhau<\/span> (geneaology) traces back to the moku (district) of Waialua, <span aria-label=\"Oahu\">O&#699;ahu<\/span>. Oshiro\u2019s academic path at <abbr>HSHK<\/abbr> opened the door for the aspiring marine biologist to immerse himself in science through an &#699;ike <span aria-label=\"Hawaii\">Hawai&#699;i<\/span> (Hawaiian knowledge) lens.<\/p>\n<p>&ldquo;The way that <abbr>东精影业<\/abbr> M\u0101noa has prepared me for my future is by giving me avenues and the opportunity to be a part of the first generation normalizing Hawaiian culture and values in the scientific research process being conducted in <span aria-label=\"Hawaii\">Hawai&#699;i<\/span>,&rdquo; Oshiro explained. &ldquo;Having kumu who are academically trained scientists and grounded in their Hawaiian identity teaching at <abbr>东精影业<\/abbr> M\u0101noa has given me people to look up to and aspire to be.&rdquo;<\/p>\n<p>Oshiro will earn a bachelor\u2019s degree in Hawaiian studies with a concentration in M\u0101lama &#699;\u0100ina: Hawaiian Perspectives on Resource Management from <a href=\"https:\/\/manoa.hawaii.edu\/hshk\/kamakakuokalani\/\">Kamakak\u016bokalani Center for Hawaiian Studies<\/a>. He recently earned a research assistant position at the Coral Resilience Lab at the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.himb.hawaii.edu\/\"><span aria-label=\"Hawaii\">Hawai&#699;i<\/span> Institute of Marine Biology<\/a>.<\/p>\n<h2>Ola ka &#699;\u014dlelo (The language lives)<\/h2>\n<figure id=\"attachment_159122\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-159122\" style=\"width: 300px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/05\/manoa-hawaiinuiakea-baker-k-300x169.jpg\" alt=\"Kaneikoliakawahineikaiukapuomua Baker\" width=\"300\" height=\"169\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-159122\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/05\/manoa-hawaiinuiakea-baker-k-300x169.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/05\/manoa-hawaiinuiakea-baker-k-130x73.jpg 130w, https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/05\/manoa-hawaiinuiakea-baker-k.jpg 676w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-159122\" class=\"wp-caption-text\"><span aria-label=\"Kaneikoliakawahineikaiukapuomua\">Kaneikoliakawahineika&#699;iukapuomua<\/span> Baker<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>&#699;\u014clelo <span aria-label=\"Hawaii\">Hawai&#699;i<\/span> (Hawaiian language) surrounded Baker long before she left the womb, her parents are Hawaiian language and hana keaka (theatre) kumu at <abbr>东精影业<\/abbr> M\u0101noa. Raised in <span aria-label=\"Kahaluu\">Kahalu&#699;u<\/span> along the abundant <span aria-label=\"Koolau\">Ko&#699;olau<\/span> mountain range, Baker attended Hawaiian immersion school from preschool through high school and continued studying the native tongue of her ancestors as an &#699;\u014dlelo <span aria-label=\"Hawaii\">Hawai&#699;i<\/span> major.<\/p>\n<p>&ldquo;I believe that my education at <abbr>东精影业<\/abbr> M\u0101noa in the school of <a href=\"https:\/\/manoa.hawaii.edu\/hshk\/kawaihuelani\/\">Kawaihuelani Center for Hawaiian Language<\/a> strengthened my ability to research in my language and to perpetuate the &#699;ike (knowledge) of our k\u016bpuna (ancestors) by giving the learning tools of language,&rdquo; she explained. &ldquo;Language is not only a tool of communication, it is the bridge from our world to the p\u014d world where the many k\u016bpuna that came before us reside.&rdquo;<\/p>\n<p>Baker\u2019s passion for <span aria-label=\"hai\">ha&#699;i<\/span> <span aria-label=\"moolelo\">mo&#699;olelo<\/span> (storytelling) and hana keaka have blossomed within the <abbr>东精影业<\/abbr> M\u0101noa Hawaiian theatre program, she recently <a href=\"https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/2022\/05\/05\/uh-hawaiian-language-play-scoops-8-national-awards\/\">earned national recognition<\/a> from the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.kennedy-center.org\/education\/opportunities-for-artists\/pre-professional-artist-training\/kcactf\/\">Kennedy Center American College Theater Festival<\/a> for her starring role in <abbr>东精影业<\/abbr> Hawaiian language play, <em>He Leo Aloha<\/em>.
