Just one year after high school, these students graduated from the <a href=\"https:\/\/hawaii.hawaii.edu\/palamanui\"><span aria-label=\"Hawaii\">Hawai&#699;i<\/span> Community College&#8211;P\u0101lamanui<\/a> in Kona with Associate of Applied Science (<abbr>AAS<\/abbr>) degrees in <a href=\"http:\/\/www.hawaii.hawaii.edu\/amt\">Automotive Mechanics Technology<\/a> (<abbr>AMT<\/abbr>).<\/p>\n<p>They now have college degrees and work experience, and are ready for a job market where there is strong local demand for their skills.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_159355\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-159355\" style=\"width: 300px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/05\/hawaii-palamanui-automotive-rivera-t-300x169.jpg\" alt=\"Student working on a tire\" width=\"300\" height=\"169\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-159355\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/05\/hawaii-palamanui-automotive-rivera-t-300x169.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/05\/hawaii-palamanui-automotive-rivera-t-130x73.jpg 130w, https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/05\/hawaii-palamanui-automotive-rivera-t.jpg 676w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-159355\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Titon Riveira working at the automotive shop at Enterprise Rent-a-Car in Kona<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>&ldquo;It was a really great experience,&rdquo; said graduate <strong>Titon Riveira<\/strong>. &ldquo;I learned a lot of things, and it woke me up to the automotive world.&rdquo;<\/p>\n<p>The graduates were part of the Kealakehe High School (<abbr>KHS<\/abbr>) Automotive Mechanics Early College Pilot Program, which was launched in 2019 to meet the needs of local students and the Kona community.<\/p>\n<p>The program helped <strong>Ken Takeishi<\/strong> attain a long-held goal.<\/p>\n<p>&ldquo;It came by really fast,&rdquo; said Takeishi. &ldquo;I\u2019m excited though because I finally have a degree from college, and I always dreamed of having a degree from college.&rdquo;<\/p>\n<blockquote><p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/tag\/commencement\/\">More highlights from the commencement ceremonies and our amazing graduates<\/a><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>The program is a partnership between <span aria-label=\"Hawaii\">Hawai&#699;i<\/span> P&#8211;20 Partnerships in Education, <abbr>KHS<\/abbr>, <span aria-label=\"Hawaii\">Hawai&#699;i<\/span> <abbr title=\"Community College\">CC<\/abbr> and Kona automotive businesses.<\/p>\n<p>&ldquo;This program is a creative solution that provides West <span aria-label=\"Hawaii\">Hawai&#699;i<\/span> youth with valuable training in a skilled trade while also supporting the needs of local businesses,&rdquo; said <strong>Raynette &ldquo;Kalei&rdquo; Haleamau-Kam<\/strong>, director of <span aria-label=\"Hawaii\">Hawai&#699;i<\/span> <abbr>CC<\/abbr>&#8211;P\u0101lamanui. &ldquo;It was truly a community effort. Mahalo to everyone involved.&rdquo;<\/p>\n<h2>Jump start in high school<\/h2>\n<p>The <abbr>AMT<\/abbr> Early College program gave these students a jump start on their college degrees while they were in high school. They began earning credits toward their college degrees in 2019 as juniors at <abbr>KHS<\/abbr>; they completed approximately half the degree requirements by the time they graduated from high school in 2021; and this past academic year, they completed their <abbr>AAS<\/abbr> degrees through a combination of work-based learning at Kona automotive shops and classes at <span aria-label=\"Hawaii\">Hawai&#699;i<\/span> <abbr>CC<\/abbr>&#8211;P\u0101lamanui.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_159353\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-159353\" style=\"width: 300px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/05\/hawaii-palamanui-automotive-kam-k-300x169.jpg\" alt=\"Student working under a car flashing a shaka\" width=\"300\" height=\"169\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-159353\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/05\/hawaii-palamanui-automotive-kam-k-300x169.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/05\/hawaii-palamanui-automotive-kam-k-130x73.jpg 130w, https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/05\/hawaii-palamanui-automotive-kam-k.jpg 676w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-159353\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Kamrin Kam working at No Limitz Auto Repair in Kona<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Early College classes&#8212;which allow high school students to take classes that satisfy requirements for both a high school diploma and a college degree&#8212;have become widespread in recent years. What makes the <abbr>AMT<\/abbr> Early College program unique is that it is Career and Technical Education (<abbr>CTE<\/abbr>) focused, is cohort-based, and prepares students for specific careers for which there is a demonstrated need in the community.<\/p>\n<p><span aria-label=\"Hawaii\">Hawai&#699;i<\/span> <abbr>CC<\/abbr> Chancellor <strong>Rachel Solemsaas<\/strong> said the <abbr>AMT<\/abbr> program is part of a growing trend at <span aria-label=\"Hawaii\">Hawai&#699;i<\/span> <abbr>CC<\/abbr> to offer more Early College <abbr>CTE<\/abbr> programs, in order to support <span aria-label=\"Hawaii\">Hawai&#699;i<\/span> Island\u2019s high school seniors\u2019 college and career plans.<\/p>\n<p>&ldquo;On the initial implementation of Early College, we noticed we were not reaching as many non-college-going high school students as we wanted,&rdquo; said Solemsaas. &ldquo;By offering Early College Career and Technical Education programs like Automotive Mechanics Technology to the high schools, we can reach a different population of students, who can see a college pathway is attainable for them, and provide a boost to their college and career journeys.&rdquo;<\/p>\n<p>In addition to the <abbr>AMT<\/abbr> students, 18 students from <span aria-label=\"Kau\">Ka&#699;&#363;<\/span> High School are receiving certificates in Agriculture from <span aria-label=\"Hawaii\">Hawai&#699;i<\/span> <abbr>CC<\/abbr> this year. <span aria-label=\"Hawaii\">Hawai&#699;i<\/span> <abbr>CC<\/abbr>\u2019s Early Childhood Education program has also partnered with local high schools on the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.earlylearningcareerpathways.com\/\">Early Learning Career Pathways Project<\/a>, and there are conversations about adding more Early College pathways in carpentry and the culinary arts.<\/p>\n<p>The ultimate goal, Solemsaas said, is to increase the rate at which <span aria-label=\"Hawaii\">Hawai&#699;i<\/span> Island high school graduates attend college and improve their career mobility by allowing them to earn degrees and certificates.<\/p>\n<h2>Collaboration key to success<\/h2>\n<p><strong>Chris Ibarra<\/strong>, a <abbr>KHS<\/abbr> and <span aria-label=\"Hawaii\">Hawai&#699;i<\/span> <abbr>CC<\/abbr> Automotive Mechanics Instructor, said the Kona businesses were essential partners and gave students valuable experience.<\/p>\n<p>&ldquo;The businesses and relationships we made in the community were a big help, because the students got the full experience of a shop with the hands-on learning and added pressure that comes with it,&rdquo; Ibarra said.<\/p>\n<p>Funding for the partnership is supported by <span aria-label=\"Hawaii\">Hawai&#699;i<\/span> Community Foundation, GEAR UP <span aria-label=\"Hawaii\">Hawai&#699;i<\/span>, the Stupski Foundation, The Harry and Jeanette Weinberg Foundation, <span aria-label=\"Hawaii\">Hawai&#699;i<\/span> 3R\u2019s and the \u0112lama Project.<\/p>\n<p>After <strong>Chase Fernandez<\/strong> received his <span aria-label=\"Hawaii\">Hawai&#699;i<\/span> <abbr>CC<\/abbr> diploma, the graduate gave a big mahalo to everyone involved.<\/p>\n<p>&ldquo;Thank you, everybody, for your support and trying to get us through this program,&rdquo; said Fernandez. &ldquo;I know it wasn\u2019t easy.
