Schatz is the Senate Committee on Indian Affairs chairman and held the hearings, titled &ldquo;Upholding The Federal Trust Responsibility: Funding &#38; Program Access For Innovation In The Native Hawaiian Community,&rdquo; on June 1 at the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.eastwestcenter.org\/\">East-West Center<\/a> at <abbr title=\"东精影业\">东精影业<\/abbr> M\u0101noa and on June 2 at the <abbr>东精影业<\/abbr> Hilo <a href=\"https:\/\/hilo.hawaii.edu\/catalog\/khuok-college-of-hawaiian-language-undergrad.php\">Ka Haka &#699;Ula O <span aria-label=\"Keelikolani\">Ke&#699;elik&#333;lani<\/span> College of Hawaiian Language<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Winona Kaalouahi Lee<\/strong>, the associate chair of the <abbr>东精影业<\/abbr> M\u0101noa <a href=\"https:\/\/jabsom.hawaii.edu\/\">John A. Burns School of Medicine<\/a> (<abbr>JABSOM<\/abbr>) <a href=\"https:\/\/jabsom.hawaii.edu\/departments\/dnhh\/\">Department of Native Hawaiian Health<\/a>, participated in the June 1 hearing, and <abbr>东精影业<\/abbr> Hilo Ka Haka &#699;Ula O <span aria-label=\"Keelikolani\">Ke&#699;elik&#333;lani<\/span> College of Hawaiian Language Director <strong>Keiki <span aria-label=\"Kawaiaea\">Kawai&#699;ae&#699;a<\/span><\/strong> and <abbr>东精影业<\/abbr> M\u0101noa <a href=\"https:\/\/cms.ctahr.hawaii.edu\/\">College of Tropical Agriculture and Human Resources<\/a> Associate Researcher <strong>Noa Kekuewa Lincoln<\/strong> participated in the June 2 hearing.<\/p>\n<p>&ldquo;The federal government has a trust responsibility to Native Hawaiians&#8212;just like it does with American Indians and Alaska Natives&#8212;and that trust responsibility must be fulfilled,&rdquo; said Schatz when he opened the hearings. &ldquo;That is why we brought this conversation home&#8212;for the first time in more than a decade to hear about how this committee can seek equity for Native Hawaiians and support a thriving Native Hawaiian community.&rdquo;<\/p>\n<p>Lee focused on health disparities in her testimony, saying that Native Hawaiians have higher rates of diabetes, obesity, hypertension, substance abuse, depression and suicide compared to other ethnic groups in <span aria-label=\"Hawaii\">Hawai&#699;i<\/span>, and these problems were amplified by the COVID-19 pandemic.<\/p>\n<p>&ldquo;Access to quality and timely medical care for Native Hawaiians is challenging due in part to the severe physician shortage we face here in <span aria-label=\"Hawaii\">Hawai&#699;i<\/span>, as well as underrepresentation of Native Hawaiians in medicine and science,&rdquo; said Lee during the hearing as part of a joint testimony with Joseph <span aria-label=\"Keaweaimoku\">Keawe&#699;aimoku<\/span> Kaholokula, the chair of the <abbr>东精影业<\/abbr> M\u0101noa JABSOM Department of Native Hawaiian Health. &ldquo;Native Hawaiians make up only 4.5% of the physician workforce while comprising 21% of our general population.&rdquo;<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_160315\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-160315\" style=\"width: 300px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/06\/system-schatz-hearing-hilo-2-300x169.jpg\" alt=\"Hearing witnesses\" width=\"300\" height=\"169\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-160315\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/06\/system-schatz-hearing-hilo-2-300x169.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/06\/system-schatz-hearing-hilo-2-130x73.jpg 130w, https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/06\/system-schatz-hearing-hilo-2.jpg 676w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-160315\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Keiki <span aria-label=\"Kawaiaea\">Kawai&#699;ae&#699;a<\/span> (second from right)<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Among her comments, <span aria-label=\"Kawaiaea\">Kawai&#699;ae&#699;a<\/span> commended Schatz for introducing a bill to establish a federally funded Native American Language Resource Center.<\/p>\n<p>&ldquo;We lack the resources that such foreign language and area of study programs receive, including any of the 15 federally funded, national foreign language resource centers,&rdquo; said Lincoln in his testimony, adding that the greatest barriers to Indigenous agriculture and food systems is access to land and water resources.<\/p>\n<p>&ldquo;We greatly appreciate Senator Schatz\u2019s pioneering leadership of the Senate Committee on Indian Affairs, including by hosting two field hearings in <span aria-label=\"Hawaii\">Hawai&#699;i<\/span> with key <abbr>东精影业<\/abbr> leaders,&rdquo;
