He graduated and played football at Kamehameha Schools and Oregon State University and had a stand-out career with the <abbr>NFL<\/abbr>\u2019s Detroit Lions.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_160659\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-160659\" style=\"width: 300px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/06\/system-freitas-grad-300x169.jpg\" alt=\"Rockne Freitas commencement picture\" width=\"300\" height=\"169\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-160659\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/06\/system-freitas-grad-300x169.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/06\/system-freitas-grad-130x73.jpg 130w, https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/06\/system-freitas-grad.jpg 676w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-160659\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">John Freitas was proud when son Rockne finished his dissertation.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>After returning to <span aria-label=\"Hawaii\">Hawai&#699;i<\/span> he served in multiple roles in the <abbr title=\"东精影业\">东精影业<\/abbr> M\u0101noa Athletics Department, including a brief stint as athletics director and then as vice president of University Relations. Along the way, he earned master\u2019s and doctoral degrees in education from <abbr>东精影业<\/abbr> M\u0101noa. <\/p>\n<p>&ldquo;Rockne is truly one of a kind. Someone like him comes around once in a generation,&rdquo; said former <abbr>东精影业<\/abbr> President <strong>Albert Simone<\/strong>, who hired Freitas to serve as vice president for university relations in 1990. &ldquo;I recalled him at the State Capitol, often several times a week at 11:00 p.m. and later, meeting with key legislative leaders, assisting them in their work and me in our work together at <abbr>东精影业<\/abbr>. Ching said Freitas envisioned <abbr>东精影业<\/abbr> as the world\u2019s model Indigenous-serving higher education institution in leadership development and community engagement.<\/p>\n<p>&ldquo;<span aria-label=\"Hawaii\">Hawai&#699;i<\/span> has lost a powerful force for equity and access in higher education,&rdquo; said <abbr>东精影业<\/abbr> West <span aria-label=\"Oahu\">O&#699;ahu<\/span> Chancellor <strong>Maenette Benham<\/strong>. &ldquo;Throughout his career he advocated for the underdog! As the chancellor of <abbr>东精影业<\/abbr> West <span aria-label=\"Oahu\">O&#699;ahu<\/span> he was devoted to our west-side families and communities, and to the brilliance and potential of this campus.&rdquo;<\/p>\n<h2>Humble offensive lineman<\/h2>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/06\/system-freitas-shaka-240x300.jpg\" alt=\"Rockne Freitas with his Polynesian Football Hall of Fame poster\" width=\"240\" height=\"300\" class=\"alignright size-medium wp-image-160658\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/06\/system-freitas-shaka-240x300.jpg 240w, https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/06\/system-freitas-shaka-104x130.jpg 104w, https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/06\/system-freitas-shaka.jpg 250w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 240px) 100vw, 240px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Among his many honors, Freitas was recognized as a Distinguished Alumnus of both <abbr>东精影业<\/abbr> and Oregon State University, and was inducted into the Polynesian Football Hall of Fame.<\/p>\n<p>&ldquo;He wanted to break barriers,&rdquo; said son Makai Freitas. &ldquo;He felt that athletics was not the end&#8212;athletics should be used to open doors and education should be a key component in that advancement.&rdquo;<\/p>\n<p>Freitas would often tell his sons that only good things come from hard work. Makoa Freitas, who also had an <abbr>NFL<\/abbr> career as an offensive lineman, remembers that when he and his brother had to mix cement, it was always by hand because that was what was expected. Both sons say their father always brought his work ethic to every endeavor.<\/p>\n<p>&ldquo;He always tried to help others,&rdquo; Makoa Freitas said. &ldquo;Most of us offensive linemen&#8212;we don\u2019t get the glory, and that\u2019s okay.
